The nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced, and included in the nominees for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series is Wonder Man star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. It marks the actor’s second Emmy nomination, following his nod for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for HBO’s Watchmen in 2020, and his third for Wonder Man, following similar recognition from the Dorian and Black Reel Awards
Abdul-Mateen is the fifth actor to receive an Emmy nomination for his work on a Marvel Television project, following Don Cheadle (who was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, much to his own surprise), F. Murray Abraham (for Character Voice-Over Performance in Moon Knight), Jeffrey Wright (for What If…?), and the late Chadwick Boseman (who won posthumously for What If…?)
Elsewhere, HBO Max’s The Pitt and Hacks led with a respective 25 and 24 nominations, the latter of which marks the most for a comedy at the Emmys to date. The final seasons of The Boys and Stranger Things were shut out of the main categories, although Stranger Things earned seven nominations in the Creative Arts categories, Wednesday received six, and The Boys got five. Gen V was nominated for Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Single Episode, along with The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon
However, they were eclipsed by Spider-Noir, which got 11, including Outstanding Cinematography for a Series (One Hour). Further nominees included Alien: Earth, which received four; the lateRob Reiner, who was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for The Bear; Star Wars: Visions — Black, for Outstanding Animated Program; and Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord and Predator: Killer of Killers, both for Outstanding Sound Editing in a Comedy Or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Animation.
