In Spring 2027, the sequel to Captain Underpants: The First Epic Manga will arrive from Scholastic imprint Graphix, and today, you’ll get your first look at the cover for the aptly-named Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets: The Second Epic Manga. Written & adapted by Dav Pilkey (Dog Man; Cat Kid Comic Club) from 1999’s Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets, The Second Epic Manga features manga art by Japanese manga artist Motojiro.

Pilkey’s Epic Empire
In the three decades (that’s right) since 1997’s The Adventures ofCaptain Underpants was first published, the illustrated children’s chapter book field which it helped create has flourished. And in the intervening decades, Pilkey has created and/or continued some of the most popular titles the field has to offer.
As noted by Scholastic’s PR, there are “more than 90 million copies of Captain Underpants books in print to date, with translations in 37 languages.” The main Captain Underpants series now includes a dozen novels and additional spinoffs and activity books. And that’s not to mention the 2017 movie adaptation, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, or 2018’s The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, the three season series on Netflix.
In 2016, Pilkey remade the game once again with the debut of the Dog Man series. Itself a spinoff of Captain Underpants, Dog Man now has fourteen books in the series, with a fifteenth, Dog Man: A Sprinkle in Time, coming on November 3rd, 2026. Here’s a look at the cover for that forthcoming volume, in case you’d previously missed it:
Pilkey’s sequential graphic narrative empire has only continued to grow. A spinoff series of Dog Man called Cat Kid Comic Club began in 2020, and has subsequently reached five entires, with a sixth forthcoming. In 2023, that series received an Off Broadway stage adaptation.
Then in April 2026, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Manga was released, an adaptation of the original Captain Underpants book. Like The Second Epic Manga, it was written & adapted by Pilkey with manga art by Motojiro. And it will not surprise you, savvy reader, to hear that this book appeared across national bestseller lists, just like the sequel is assuredly going to do next year!
