PS6 launch line-up plans teased as PlayStation to reboot PS1 and PS2 classics

For the launch of the PlayStation 6, Sony is apparently looking for developers to carry the torch of its legacy IPs.

At the time of writing, there’s no release date for the PlayStation 6, nor has the console even been officially announced, but we all know it’s coming. We also know it won’t be u-turning Sony’s decision to kill physical games media…

According to an anonymous leaker on ResetEra called thisiserfan Sony is already thinking about its first-party exclusives, and hopes its PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 era of games can be part of the fun.

“Hey everyone” began the post by thisiserfan. “Based on what I’ve heard/gathered, [Sony] recently opened its doors to licensing agreements and are accepting multiple game pitches. That’s why there are many rumours all of a sudden.”

The leaker went on to say that three IPs will potentially see a revival: Sly Cooper, Ape Escape and Killzone.

Many gamers may have already heard rumours of the latter two series being brought back, but as far as leaks go, Sly Cooper’s comeback is a new development.

Sly’s return is great news to gamers like myself, because if we’re going to talk about underrated PlayStation exclusives that deserve another chance to shine, Sly Cooper will definitely be part of that conversation. If you haven’t played it yet, you can find the first two games on the PlayStation Store right now.

Nothing has been said about which studios are interested in developing a new piece of PlayStation history, but if pitches are currently being accepted, it shouldn’t be long before something else gets leaked.

There’s a long, long list of PlayStation IPs that could, and should, make up the PlayStation 6’s launch line-up. However, given what we know about the PlayStation 6 so far, even returning mascots like Sly Cooper might not be enough to sell units en masse.

PlayStation 6: What we know so far

The PlayStation 6 is going to be an interesting console. The next generation of console hardware has the potential to shatter the game industry due to the rising cost of hardware and software.

It’s currently expected to launch in late 2027 according to insider reports, likely alongside the next Xbox.

As for the price, this is where it gets really ugly. Current projections place the new console at around $1,000-$1,200. We’d tell you to take that with a pinch of salt, but with the way things are going, it’s not very hard to believe.

If that’s the case, it’s going to be a tough sell. Xbox Project Helix is expected to cost a similar fortune, but is rumoured to have the added benefit of supporting PC games and digital stores like Steam.

Should the PlayStation 5 only support console games, including Sony’s limited first-party offering, it could suffer.

Perhaps that’s why Sony is so keen to revive some of its older franchises; to pull in the older demographic who’ll be more likely to afford its most-expensive console yet.
