MIPCOM 2026: Hat Trick’s “Smoggie Queens” heads to market with Series 3 announcement
Hat Trick International is bringing the award-winning BBC comedy to Cannes following its recommission for a third season and key international sales to Disney+, BINGE, and Foxtel.

Hat Trick International (HTI) has added Series 3 of the acclaimed BBC sitcom “Smoggie Queens” to its international distribution slate for MIPCOM 2026. Produced by Hat Trick Productions for BBC Three and BBC i<a href="https://comicvibe.com/i-play-rocky-review-can-this-crowd/” title=”'I Play Rocky' review: Can this crowd”>Player, the series has secured multi-territory acquisitions ahead of the market, with Disney+ acquiring Series 1 and 2 for the UK (launching later this year and in 2027, respectively) and BINGE alongside Foxtel picking up the first two seasons for Australia.
Created and written by RTS Award-winning and BAFTA-nominated writer Phil Dunning, “Smoggie Queens” (18×30’) centers on a fiercely proud group of friends navigating life within Middlesbrough’s LGBTQ+ community. Set against the backdrop of North East England, the comedy blends razor-sharp humor, eccentric characters, and emotional depth, establishing itself as a standout contemporary British comedy.
Sarah Tong, Director of Sales at Hat Trick International, commented:“British comedy is iconic around the world, and Hat Trick has created some of the most enduring comedy of the past few decades, from ‘Father Ted’ and ‘Episodes’ to ‘Derry Girls’. Comedy can be one of the toughest genres to sell internationally, but ‘Smoggie Queens’ is bold, original and genuinely laugh-out-loud. We’re delighted to take Series 3 to MIPCOM and introduce this brilliant British comedy to audiences around the world.”
The series was commissioned by Jon Petrie, Director of BBC Comedy, with Gregor Sharp serving as Commissioning Editor and Chris Jones as Series Producer. Worldwide distribution rights for all 18 episodes across the three seasons are managed globally by Hat Trick International.
