There’s already a bible in development for the Absolute Batman cartoon, and comic creators Scott Snyder & Nick Dragotta are writing it

Scott Snyder talks about the Absolute Batman animated series, how it will look, and how the storytelling will differ from the comic

Last month DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation announced that an animated series based on Absolute Batman was in development. I’m not being hyperbolic when I say this series has the chance to be a real game changer for the medium. We’ve seen how successful Absolute Batman is in comic form, and how it’s taken over TikTok. Television shows like Invincible have also shown us how good a comic book series can be when it stays faithful to the source material. Absolute Batman has all the ingredients to be one of the greatest pieces of comic book media ever made….as long as they follow the recipe.

Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, the team behind the best-selling comic, are acting as executive producers for the animated series, which is a promising sign. This isn’t a vanity title; Snyder and Dragotta are deeply involved in the show’s production. In fact, the two creators are currently putting the series bible together.

“We have started working on it. We’ve had our initial development conversations, and I’m really excited,” Scott Snyder says during an appearance on AIPT Comics Podcast. “[Nick Dragotta] is an executive producer, so the two of us get to really have a lot of say creatively. And the first steps are just writing a series format. Kind of a bible for the whole series showing how many episodes we think it is and the structure of it. So that’s literally what we’re doing tomorrow when we get together.”

Snyder also praises the team at Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios, who he says have been very helpful behind the scenes.

“Warner Bros. is amazing. The people, James Gunn and Peter Safran particularly, and Peter Giradi, who runs the animation department have been so encouraging. I’ve gotten to know Peter Girardi over the years because we had overlap in animation through Wytches and stuff like that. I can’t say enough good things about how creator-forward they are, and how hard they work to make sure that Nick and I could really be part of the creative drive of it.”

Snyder also promises that the animated series will stay true to the look of the comic.

“I can’t wait. We’re just starting, but I have a lot of faith that it’s going to be special. For people who were concerned about what style, it really looks like the comic book come to life three-dimensionally in the coolest way. It’s not a departure in a way where it’s going to look live-action. We want it to be as though the comic – it’s almost a bigger more robust version of the comic on the screen.”

“A lot of it is like what parts can we tell in animation that we haven’t’ told in the series. More about them at work. More about the friends and their journey. Because there’s different spaces. It’s weird, because you start to learn when you’re doing animation. In a comic a giant moment is a splash, and it eats up a 20th of your thing. When you’re writing animation, a giant moment, like a huge punch, it’s just a line. It could be two seconds, so you have room for other things. It’s a different density. So a lot of it is building out connective tissue, making sure the emotionality is really there. I’m very excited to get started.”

Here’s an update to date guide on the Absolute Batman release schedule.
