Crime thriller a welcome departure from family dramas,
earns praise for its unconventional approach

Qaisar KamranJuly 15, 20262 min readKARACHI:

Express Entertainment’s 15-episode crime thriller Missing Darling has concluded its run, leaving audiences with a mystery that came full circle. Breaking away from the formula of conventional family dramas, the series blended police investigations, the entertainment industry, media culture, human psychology and suspense into a story that earned praise for its unconventional approach

The drama begins with the sudden disappearance of actress Nina Kashif. After her missing-person report is filed, the investigation is assigned to SHO Inspector Sajid, played by Yasir Hussain. As the investigation progresses, every episode uncovers a new clue, with each suspect adding another layer to the mystery before the truth is finally revealed

Beyond the police investigation, Missing Darling also offers viewers a glimpse into the inner workings of Pakistan’s entertainment industry. The story explores professional jealousy among actors, rivalries, makeup artists, production crews, journalists and the realities of television production

In one memorable scene, police officers explain to an actor portraying a police officer that wearing an official police uniform on screen requires formal permission, adding a realistic touch to the narrative

The series has also reminded some viewers of real-life incidents. Several social media users commented that the disappearance of an actress and the unfolding investigation echoed certain high-profile missing-person cases in Pakistan, although the drama’s storyline and ending are entirely fictional

Despite being a serious crime thriller, the writers also weave subtle humour throughout the series. Rather than relying on slapstick comedy, the lighter moments emerge through witty, sarcastic conversations and everyday interactions, providing welcome relief from the otherwise tense atmosphere

One of the final episode’s most talked-about scenes features a humorous conversation about the differences between Generation Z, Millennials and Generation Y. The exchange between Inspector Sajid and a police officer became a fan favourite for balancing comedy with the drama’s otherwise serious tone

Perhaps the most distinctive storytelling device, however, is how the drama comes full circle. In the opening episode, a character asks, “Do you know Saba Qamar?” The very same question is repeated in the closing moments of the final episode, bringing the narrative back to where it began and giving the series a memorable ending

Viewers on YouTube and other social media platforms praised Missing Darling for offering something different from mainstream Pakistani television dramas. Many described it as a refreshing crime thriller that successfully combined suspense, investigative storytelling and realistic social themes

One aspect of the series that particularly resonated with audiences was its resemblance to certain real-life events. Some scenes reminded viewers of the widely discussed case of Pakistani actress and model Humaira Asghar, whose body was discovered in July 2025 inside her apartment in Karachi’s DHA Phase VI after police and court officials arrived to execute an eviction order. According to investigators and forensic findings, she is believed to have died eight to ten months before her body was discovered, raising serious questions about isolation, disappearance and delayed discovery.

Although Missing Darling is not based on the Humaira Asghar case and its plot unfolds very differently, several viewers noted similarities in the central premise of a missing actress, the police investigation, intense media coverage and the gradual uncovering of hidden truths

With its compelling mystery, grounded police investigation, social commentary and unconventional storytelling, Missing Darling has established itself as one of the more distinctive Pakistani crime dramas in recent years, offering viewers a narrative that explores not only crime but also the realities of media, showbiz and contemporary society
