Sony’s VR patents are reportedly going to Meta, which isn’t a good sign for PSVR 3

TL;DR: In a move that suggests Sony is scaling back its ambitions in the virtual, augmented, and mixed reality space, the company has reportedly sold a massive portfolio of VR-, AR-, and XR-related patents to Meta. The deal also suggests that the rumored successor to PSVR 2 is unlikely to see the light of day.

Records from US and international patent offices reveal that Meta has purchased 419 patents covering head-mounted displays, XR glasses, and VR tracking technologies developed by Sony between 2010 and 2022. The deal suggests an abrupt change of heart at Sony, whose senior VP, Eric Lempel, claimed in 2024 that VR was an important sector for the company.

According to ZDNet Korea, Meta and Sony signed a Confirmatory Assignment agreement in December 2025, formalizing Sony’s plans to transfer its VR patents to Meta. The portfolio includes 180 US patents, 43 of which were transferred between June and September 2026. The remaining 239 patents are reportedly registered in Japan, China, South Korea, Europe, and other regions.

Sony’s decision to offload its VR patents suggests that the rumored PlayStation VR 3 could be dead in the water. Moreover, online rumors indicate that Sony’s retreat from the VR space could have direct implications for PSVR 2 owners. While existing headsets should remain fully functional, users are unlikely to see any new first-party VR titles for the PS5 or PS5 Pro in the future.

Despite the disappointing news about PSVR 3, VR gaming enthusiasts have something to cheer about: the recent release of a free third-party VR mod for EA’s 2016 FPS classic, Titanfall 2. Developed by Jordan “CircuitLord” Juarez, the mod brings the entire game into VR through a simple 350KB download available from the developer’s GitHub repository.

The mod adds full VR support for the Titanfall 2 campaign, including stereoscopic rendering, full-body inverse kinematics, manual reloading, Titan controls, and redesigned interactions tailored specifically for VR. It works with any PC VR headset that supports OpenXR. The mod currently supports only the single-player campaign, but the developer says he is working on multiplayer modes using private VR servers.

Released in late September, the mod has already received widespread praise, with The Verge calling it “<a href="https://www.theverge.com/games/1006448/titanfall-2-vr-mod-circuitlord-jordan-juarez” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>one of the best VR games ever.” The experience is particularly accessible because Titanfall 2 is currently on sale for just $5 and can run on relatively modest GPUs, such as the GTX 1080. The developer confirms that the mod works with all three PC versions of Titanfall 2.
