Zelda’s 40th Anniversary Direct
Nintendo has too much to announce for one broadcast this week, so it is running two. Before Wednesday’s general showcase of Nintendo Switch 2 games, the company is dedicating a separate stream to The Legend of Zelda, timed to the series’ 40th anniversary. The headline item is already confirmed: the Ocarina of Time remake.
Key Takeaways:
- The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct starts at 10AM ET on September 8 and runs about 30 minutes, on YouTube and the Nintendo Today! app.
- Nintendo has confirmed the stream covers The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2, plus anniversary initiatives outside games.
- A second, general Nintendo Direct follows on September 9 at the same time, running roughly 45 minutes, with a Nintendo Treehouse stream after it.
The remake is slated for release sometime this year, which makes a date announcement the obvious candidate for the show. If Nintendo holds that window, the game needs to reach shelves before late November to catch Black Friday.
The calendar around it is crowded. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort already occupies October, so a November slot for Ocarina of Time would put it directly against Grand Theft Auto 6. That is less reckless than it sounds. The two run on different platforms, and the Zelda remake is one of the few games with enough pull to hold attention during a Rockstar launch week.
The Movie Question
Zelda reaches cinemas next spring as well. The live-action film arrives on April 30, and this Direct is the natural place for a first look. A short teaser now with a proper trailer in a couple of months would follow the usual pattern. Filming wrapped in April, and Nintendo has released little beyond promotional images of the two leads.
Half an hour is a lot of runtime for two projects, which leaves room for surprises. A Wind Waker remake would fit the anniversary framing. So would a first tease of the next mainline entry. Nintendo announced what became Tears of the Kingdom in 2019, two years after Breath of the Wild shipped. Three years have now passed since Link’s last adventure, so the timing lines up.
Why Two Shows Instead of One
Splitting the week is unusual for a company that normally consolidates everything into a single presentation, and the reason is scheduling pressure rather than generosity. Rockstar’s game moved to November 19 after a second delay, pushed back from May and originally targeted at 2025. Every major publisher spent this year rearranging release plans around that single date. Giving Zelda its own 30 minutes, a day before the general showcase, guarantees the anniversary coverage does not get buried under whatever else Nintendo has ready for Switch 2.
Anniversary programming also does more work than it used to. A 40-year-old franchise now carries a film, merchandise, hardware tie-ins and a back catalogue that keeps selling, and the Direct format lets Nintendo present all of it as one story. The company’s own teaser promised initiatives beyond games alongside the Ocarina of Time details, which is a strong hint that the film gets its moment. The Legend of Zelda first appeared in Japan on February 21, 1986, on the Famicom Disk System, reaching North America the following year in that gold cartridge. Four decades later the pitch is the same one it always was: go into the woods, work out where you are, and see what happens.
