A July 2024 job listing for a Director of Client Partnerships at SIE Media Solutions, spotted by Digiday, lays out the plan: scale non-endemic brand advertising across PlayStation through programmatic, FAST/CTV, and “emerging ad solutions.” The target categories include CPG, retail, automotive, financial services, telecom, and entertainment. This isn’t a test balloon — it’s a hiring mandate to formalize a global ad-sales organization. Sony has tried ads on PlayStation before, and players pushed back hard. If you suspect you’re paying too much for hardware and subscriptions already, this trend makes that sting worse.

    What Sony Is Actually Building

    A formal ad-sales infrastructure signals Sony is treating your console as a media platform, not just a gaming device.

    The job listing describes a role tasked with “defining and driving the global strategy and day-to-day execution” of PlayStation’s client-partnership sales organization across all PlayStation markets That’s not an experiment — it’s organizational architecture. FAST (free, ad-supported streaming TV) and CTV (connected TV) inventory signals Sony sees your console as a cross-screen media surface with monetizable eyeballs attached

    Here’s what the listing reveals:

    • Focus: Non-endemic brands — advertisers with no connection to gaming
    • Categories: CPG, retail, automotive, financial services, telecom, entertainment
    • Formats: Programmatic, FAST/CTV, and emerging ad solutions
    • Scope: Global strategy and performance across all PlayStation markets

    A formal sales org means inventory commitments, rate cards, and brand campaigns — the kind of machinery that doesn’t stay invisible to users for long. Like Netflix’s slow pivot from “we’ll never have ads” to tiered ad-supported plans, the trajectory here follows a pattern you’ve already lived through on another screen you pay for.

    This Has Happened Before

    Sony’s ad ambitions aren’t new — but the scale and scope of this push go well beyond anything tried before.

    The likely surfaces are ones you already use daily — the PlayStation Store, PS Plus promotions, the system dashboard, programmatic placements across PlayStation media properties. If you’re paying for PS Plus Premium and start seeing retirement fund ads between menu transitions, that’s the logical endpoint of this infrastructure.

    Sony has the audience advertisers want: hundreds of millions of consoles, cross-demographic reach, and connected-TV surfaces that media buyers are actively chasing. The platform will monetize — that part isn’t really in question. The only variable is how visibly it does so, and whether Sony has actually learned anything from the WipEout backlash or just decided enough time has passed to try again.
