“Half-Pint” is honoring Netflix’s “Little House on the Prairie” series, now streaming
Melissa Gilbert, who played Laura “Half Pint” Ingalls in NBC’s beloved”Little House on the Prairie” series, shared a prairie-inspired post on her Official Modern Prairie Instagram page on July 9. The post coincided with the streaming release of the Netflix reboot, based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House” books
“We’re putting on our prairie best and sending our warmest congratulations to the cast, crew and creative team before the premiere of the new adaptation,” Gilbert, 62, wrote in the photo caption. “Stories have a remarkable way of connecting generations, and we’re grateful to everyone who continues to introduce Laura’s timeless spirit of resilience, family, and hope to new audiences.”
“We can’t wait to watch,” Gilbert added
Gilbert starred opposite Michael Landon as “Pa” Ingalls in the original series’ nine-season run (1974 to 1983). Landon died in 1991 at age 54, but Gilbert remains a vocal superstar in the “Little House” universe. The former president of the Screen Actors Guild is not officially involved with the Netflix reboot, but did visit the set
Netflix series creators have emphasized that the new series is a fresh adaptation of Wilder’s books rather than a remake of the Landon-led television series
The new cast includes Alice Halsey as “Half-Pint” Laura, Luke Bracey as Charles “Pa” Ingalls, Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline “Ma” Ingalls and Skywalker Hughes as Mary Ingalls
Gilbert toldUSA TODAY in 2024 that she is inspired by the next generation finding the original series or watching the reboot
“Seeing it through the eyes of this next generation makes it all the more special,” Gilbert said. “And also a little bit frustrating, because the same things that we were writing about and talking about then, equal rights for women, equal rights for people of color, are still the same things we’re fighting for today. I think we’ve inched forward, but certainly not enough for me, anyway.”
Halsey, 11, said in an interview with People that Gilbert gave her a hug during the “Little House” set visit
“I just saw her and I ran to her,” Halsey said. “I think she’s a really nice person. She was just so supportive. So supportive. It just made me feel so welcomed into the ‘Little House’world.”
In recent months, Gilbert has publicly and steadfastly defended her husband, actor Timothy Busfield, who is charged withalleged sexual contact with minors, saying she is “100% confident” he will be exonerated. Busfield has denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty
