LATE: X-Men DNX Slips Two Weeks But Where Is This Heading? (Spoilers)

LATE: The X-Men/Fantastic Four DNX event slips two weeks … but where is this heading? (Spoilers)

    Article Summary

    • X-Men: DNX #1 slips from September 2 to September 16, reshuffling Marvel’s event rollout and raising new schedule questions.
    • X-Men #36 sets up X-Men: DNX as the Chairman targets Magneto, believing his DNA holds the missing key to the X-Virus.
    • The Chairman tries recruiting Magneto into 3K, tying X-Men: DNX to Krakoa history, time travel fallout and mutant ideology.
    • With Marvel’s early October slate restricted, any further X-Men: DNX delay could push later chapters deeper into October.

The launch issue of the upcoming X-Men/Fantastic Four event from Marvel Comics, DNX #1, has jumped from the 2nd of September to the 16th of September, which means changes for the whole schedule. What that will mean for DNX #2, currently out on the 30th of September, I do not yet know. But what’s been going down? Last month’s X-Men #35 saw the Age Of Krakoa Beast, The Chairman, leader of mutant terrorist group 3K, redact an offer made to his younger, revived self.

He didn’t even get the chance to turn him down.

This week’s X-Men #36 by Jed MacKay and Netho Diaz saw The Chairman making a similar offer to Magneto, and throw shade at his other self…

Is this a new kind of self-deprecation? Magneto in the Age of Revelation’s future had no such power loss…The idea is that this future created that past… but then wouldn’t time travel to that future from the present have included that past? Oh no, I’ve gone cross-eyed.

X-Men #36 by Jed MacKay and Netho Diaz

“Magneto Was Right” originated as a comic-book slogan in Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely‘s New X-Men run in the early 2000s, worn on a T-shirt by Quentin Quire in the style of Che Guevara in an X-Mansion classroom being taught by Xorn (secretly Magneto) and evolved into a fan meme. It came after Magneto was presumed killed while protecting the mutant nation of Genosha during a Sentinel massacre that killed millions of mutants. Fans created art, discussed its parallels to real-world civil rights struggles. In 2008, the (now-defunct) site MagnetoWasRight.com hosted essays and material exploring the “arguable realism” of Magneto’s position. It became a shorthand for arguing that Magneto’s warnings about human intolerance had been repeatedly vindicated by in-universe events. A 2023 Magneto miniseries by J.M. DeMatteis and Todd Nauck carried the subtitle “Magneto Was Right“, and the Disney+ series X-Men ’97 saw Valerie Cooper deliver a speech concluding that “Magneto was right.”

Still, the Chairman gives it another play. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that they were playing this same game together on Krakoa…

It all comes down to the genes…

X-Men #36 by Jed MacKay and Netho Diaz

… the X-Virus in the future, blamed on 3K, was from Doug Ramsey using his Apocalyptical communication skills to speak with the virus itself, turning some humans into mutants, killing the rest and mutating other mutants further… and the key to that is hidden in Magneto’s DNA…

X-Men #36 by Jed MacKay and Netho Diaz

Well, if he won’t hand it over willingly…

X-Men #36 by Jed MacKay and Netho Diaz

And so DNX. With 3K possessing the fully finished X-Virus to wreak havoc on humanity, and this time get the deserved credit. After all, isn’t that what all comic creators want? But you may have to wait a little longer to get it. This is the original solicited schedule for DNX in September…

Nice and spaced out, right? But with the new delays, here’s how it is currently looking:

    • On Sale 9/16: DNX #1, X-MEN #37
    • On Sale 9/23 DNX #2,
    • On Sale 9/30 FANTASTIC FOUR #17, X-MEN #38

It’s complicated that Marvel Comics has stated the only Marvel titles coming out in the first week of October are the Midnight Universe books. So if any of these books get later… they will have to jump to the middle of October, currently looking like this.

    • On Sale 10/14 DNX #3, X-MEN #39
    • On Sale 10/28, X-MEN #40,FANTASTIC FOUR #18
    • On Sale 11/4 DNX #4
    • On Sale 11/11 X-MEN #41
    • On Sale 11/18 DNX #5

Maybe someone needs another trip to the future? Call it The Age Of Reasonable Scheduling?

    • X-Men #36 by Jed MacKay, Netho Diaz

DNX PROLOGUE! 3K works toward a viable build of the X-Virus, brought back from the Age of Revelation. Until now they have been frustrated – but when the Chairman realizes that the missing piece of the puzzle lies within Magneto, 3K moves on the X-Men’s home base in Alaska.
