Marvel, This Is Your Next Spectacular Spider-Man Brand New Day Variant

Marvel Comics, Dan Slott, this should be your next Spectacular Spider-Man Brand New Day cover variant, right?

    Article Summary

    • A scuffed Spider-Man Brand New Day cinema poster in Prince George went viral after a Reddit post spotlighted its Spooderman style.
    • The Hollywood Reporter identified artist Drake Landon, while Cineplex confirmed staff improvised as they waited for the real poster.
    • Landon later said head office asked for the Spider-Man Brand New Day poster to come down, though he plans limited copies.
    • Nick Pitarra suggested Marvel turn it into a variant, and Dan Slott’s Spectacular Spider-Man Brand New Day is the perfect fit.

It began with a post on Reddit, reading “Theatre in my town is so scuffed it couldn’t even get the actual movie poster for the film. Gotta give credit to whoever they got to draw the picture though.” A cinema showing Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which featured a black-and-white Spider-Man drawing in an intentionally cartoonish and crude style, in the “Spooderman” viral style, rather than the official posters that they never received from the distributor. This was the Famous Players theatre in Prince George, British Columbia. And the poster went rather viral.

But The Hollywood Reporter got the scoop, identifying him as a cinema employee, Drake Landon. And quoted Michelle Saba, VP for Cineplex, owner of Famous Players, “Our team did have a little fun as they awaited the arrival of their Spider-Man: Brand New Day poster.” And Drake saying, “It’s crazy that my art has gone that far for something so simple”. And then posting on Reddit themselves, with the subsequent bad news… “So yes, I’m the Spooder man poster artist. And yes, I’m revealing myself, because I honestly don’t care at this point. Didn’t do a post saying I did it because I was worried of being called a fraud. But I have the poster back, but sadly, due to my boss telling me that head office called and asked for it to be taken down, for reasons that make sense now I realise. I don’t wanna upset the studio, so yeah. But I plan on copying and printing a limited amount and/or making redrawn duplicates.”

But by then, the word was out. Oft-Jonathan Hickman collaborator artist Nick Pitarracommented, “Marvel Comics needs to get this on a limited edition variant cover. Super cool Spidey.” And as Dan Slott is taking to the podcasts now that his Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day comic book has been extended to ten issues, and he wants to keep it going, what better way to bump sales on the series than to get Drake Landon’s Spooder Man on an official Marvel variant cover for the series? All coloured up? Something like this?

You’d buy that for a dollar, right? Maybe five?
