Following the successful run ofAvatar Aang: The Last Airbender on Paramount+, there’s plenty for bending enthusiasts to look forward to. Avatar: Seven Havens will land on the streaming service this October, focusing on the Avatar who succeeds Korra, with the co-creators of the Nickelodeon franchise teasing another series in the works. Unfortunately, for those hoping for more movies to follow Avatar Aang’slead, Paramount has bad news for you. In recent reports, it appears as though the now-defunct animated film focusing on Fire Lord Zuko has been canceled, and fans might ultimately be surprised to learn why.

Reportedly, the canceled animated film would have followed Zuko after the original series finale and would have explored the origins of the “Red Lotus.” For those who might need a refresher, the Red Lotus organization was an anarchistic band of benders that made landfall in the third season of The Legend of Korra. With each member of the team being a skilled bender, including the nefarious airbender Zaheer, they made for one of the biggest challenges Korra had to face. In a recent report, Paramount seemingly canceled the film because of its more mature, darker political tone. The studio hasn’t commented on the defunct movie or why it was canceled, though fans are sharing their thoughts on the cancellation.
Will Zuko Return?
As Avatar fans know, the recent animated film did have a significant role for Zuko to play. While Dante Basco didn’t return to reprise his role in Avatar Aang, Steven Yeun, from The Walking Dead andInvincible, took on the part of the Fire Lord. Zuko fans might have been disappointed to see that he didn’t play a larger role, as the animated movie mostly focused on Aang and his issues in coming to grips with the loss of the airbenders, but the movie still had plenty of battles for Zuko to take part in. While Zuko is sure to be a big part of Netflix’s live-action adaptation for its third and final season, his animated future is anyone’s guess.
Avatar: Seven Havens takes place following the passing of Korra, meaning that it is happening decades after the events of Avatar Aang. At this point in the timeline, Zuko is long dead, though this doesn’t necessarily mean that we won’t see him make an appearance in the sequel series. One of the benefits of the Avatar franchise has been its ability to drift into the “spirit realm,” which has offered fans the opportunity to see deceased characters make a comeback, albeit in unexpected ways. In The Legend of Korra, for example, we saw Uncle Iroh return thanks to the world of spirits, encountering the titular character, so the same could be true for a potential Zuko comeback.
