If you were sad about Outer Banks coming to an end with season five after six years of being one of Netflix‘s most popular original shows, then we have good news: the creators are reportedly already working on a prequel series for Netflix, referred to as Kildare.

As reported by <a href="https://deadline.com/2026/08/outer-banks-prequel-series-kildare-netflix-1237044715/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>Deadline in time for the show’s finale, a prequel has “entered formal development at Netflix,” though the streamer declined to comment, with the show’s original co-creators, Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke, already working away. “We’re working on the script,” Josh Pate told the publication. “We’re working hard on it with our awesome partners from Netflix, and we’re just trying to get all of it as good as it can be.”

    See the video.

Back when season five was first given the green light, Josh Pate told Teen Vogue: “We originally thought it would be five seasons, and we’re just getting to tell the story we kind of set out to tell, so we feel really fortunate.”

It seems that, somewhere along the line, the creators also began developing another story to expand their five-season plan. Or multiple, since Deadline reports the sequel is only the first one “of several projects” the trio has in the works for Netflix.

If you want to know more about the Outer Banks prequel series, we have gathered all the details we know so far below.

The Outer Banks prequel series that is being Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke reportedly takes place 20 years before the events of the original show and will “set out to explore the origins of Kildare’s deep social divide,” per Deadline

“It really is the story of how the island split—and it’s particularly relevant in our country right now—into the haves and have-nots,” Josh Pate told the publication, adding that it will focus on “how the Kooks and the Pogues started” and explore the beginnings of the “rift” that was central to the hit show.

Shannon Burke confirmed that the prequel will be “seen through the stories of some of the characters you know and some new characters.” But she also confirmed that since it’s set “20 years before,” the project will focus on “the parents’ generation.”

In 2024, Wilmington’s Port City Daily, which first reported the prequel was in “early stages” a year prior, confirmed that the project “will have a whole new set of younger actors.” The publication also added that the creators are looking to film in Wilmington, where scenes for season four of Outer Banks were already shot and where other popular shows like The Summer I Turned Pretty have also set camp.

Since the two timelines are connected, there is a chance we will see actors from the original show in the prequel, though they might not be part of the core cast. Notably, season five of Outer Banks introduced Rafe (Drew Starkey) and Sarah’s (Madelyn Cline) biological mother, Ellie Cameron, played by Natalie Brown, who you will next see in Netflix’s This Summer Will Be Different. The introduction of the character so late into the show could very well be setting the stage for the potential prequel.

While Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke have been developing the prequel for years, it’s unclear when (or if) the series will hit Netflix. Though Deadline reported that the project was entering “formal development,” the streamer has yet to announce anything and, until we get any official confirmations, we’d take anything with a grain of salt.
