More than 2,000 people attended AniWeCon 2026, an anime and pop culture convention held on August 15 at Paradise Event Arena in Yaba, Lagos, bringing together fans, content creators, gaming enthusiasts and entertainment industry representatives.
The one-day event, themed “Beyond Fury,” featured activities spanning anime, gaming, cosplay, music and Japanese popular culture, alongside industry discussions involving Nigerian and Japanese entertainment stakeholders.
Organisers said the convention hosted 42 vendor booths, gaming areas, live performances, screenings and panel discussions, reflecting the growing visibility of anime and gaming communities within Nigeria’s wider creative economy.
As part of the event’s theme, attendees were assigned to one of four symbolic paths after completing an online quiz before the convention. The paths included the Path of the Roaring Wind, represented by blue; the Path of the Sage, represented by yellow; the Path of the Phoenix, represented by red; and the Path of the Rift, represented by purple. The venue design incorporated the four paths, with colored walkways corresponding with each group.
The convention opened with remarks from Kozaki Hitoshi, Deputy Head of Mission for Japan in Nigeria, who spoke about cultural and economic relationships between Japan and Africa’s creative industries.
Japan-Africa Entertainment Business Council (JAEBC), facilitated the presence of Representatives from some Japanese organisations including the, Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS), ABC, Toppan and Tsuburaya Productions.
The programme also included a community activity, “Guess the Anime Title,” while attendees participated in surveys following screenings of Let’s Go Kaikigumi and The Ramparts of Ice. The titles were provided by TBS, with audience feedback intended to provide insight into local reception.
Industry discussions formed part of the convention’s afternoon programme.
Tolu Olowofoyekun, co-founder of Kugali Limited, delivered a keynote titled “From Fan to Founder,” focusing on the development of locally created intellectual property. Kunmi Adenipekun also delivered a virtual presentation titled “Button Mashing to Big Money.”
A panel discussion titled “Unlocking Africa-Japan Collaboration in Entertainment” brought together Aoi Torii of the Japan-Africa Entertainment Business Council, Oscar Michael of Africa Comicade, Chiemelie Ezeasor of Flocker Records, and Jide Martin, founder and CEO of Comic Republic. The session was hosted by Kenzy Udosen.
Martin also presented a screening of Trials of the Spear. Other presentations came from Meta4, which produced the physical awards presented during the AniWe Awards, and Nile Entertainment, which previewed its upcoming Street Fighter movie.
Cosplay remained one of the major attractions at the convention, with participants competing across several categories.
The Indomitable Cosplay Showcase featured five contestants, with Tweeny emerging as winner and receiving a one-year supply of Indomie.
Winners of the main cosplay competition included Cindy, who won the female category for her portrayal of Frieren, and Emmanuel, who won the male category for portraying Vice-Captain Hoshina from Kaiju No. 8.
The group category was won by Akatsuki, a Naruto-inspired cosplay group featuring that.hokage, layzeelolita, fayvore, mike.nautica, kevintsolomon, meso_oma, crochet.renee1, mizukiiverse and thatlagosweeb.
Music artist Dr Sid, founder of gaming lifestyle brand K10NDR, also made an appearance dressed as the anime character Obito. He organised a scavenger hunt in which two participants received ₦50,000 each after locating him at the venue.
Japanese fashion model and entrepreneur Natsue Tokumoto, popularly known as Nachos, was also among the international guests at the convention.
Gaming activities took place throughout the day, with zones featuring virtual reality, racing, arcade games and anime-themed games.
The competitive gaming programme included tournaments in Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Clash Royale, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Naruto Storm 4, as well as physical competitions including a noodle-eating contest.
A participant known as General Zod won both the Mortal Kombat tournament and the Street Fighter competition.
The Mortal Kombat tournament was sponsored by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Sports Marketing, while Nile Entertainment sponsored the Street Fighter tournament.
The event also hosted the AniWe Awards 2026, which recognised content creators, cosplayers, gaming influencers and other members of Nigeria’s anime and gaming community.
Organisers said the awards involved 21 categories, 208 nominations submitted by 55 verified nominators, and 6,682 final votes from 1,524 voters across 14 publicly voted categories.
Among the winners were emerald.zoldyck, who won Best Nigerian Anime Content Creator and Best Nigerian Anime Reaction Creator; Layzeelolita, who received Nigerian Cosplayer of the Year and Best Nigerian Female Cosplayer; and Osas Creates (Osassinate), who won Best Nigerian Male Cosplayer.
Demon Slayer was named Favourite Anime of the Year.
Other winners included Hisoka’s Bunny for Best Nigerian MLBB Influencer, Khalamanja for Best Nigerian Fighting Game Influencer, LAWREX for Best Nigerian AMV Creator, Otaku Scoop for Best Nigerian Anime Podcast, Afrocosplayers for Best Nigerian Group Cosplay, Artgodwinking for Best Nigerian Homegrown Gaming Influencer and Nnayi Zoom for Best Nigerian Free Fire Influencer.
Music performances were held across the convention’s two-stage layout, with DJ Ibiks performing throughout the day.
The live performance lineup included rapper Shao Dow, alongside Livera RHED, Roronoa Lola, Dark, Vwore, and live band Omnigaku.
The event’s commercial area hosted 42 vendors selling merchandise, manga, artwork and apparel.
Companies and organisations involved in the event included Indomie, Munch It, Nile Entertainment, Paga, Game Evo, Shuttlers, Kugali, Africa Comicade, Comic Republic, Case Games, iFitness and the Japan-Africa Entertainment Business Council.
The main convention ended at about 6:30pm, after which attendees, vendors and creators continued activities at an after-party featuring a DJ set by DJ Chelar.
The scale of participation at AniWeCon 2026 reflects the growing presence of organised anime, gaming and pop culture communities in Nigeria, while the participation of Japanese entertainment organisations highlights emerging opportunities for collaboration between African and Asian creative industries.
