Over 2000 people attended AniWeCon 2026 in Lagos as Nigeria’s anime community continues to develop beyond fan gatherings into a market for gaming, merchandise, content creation and entertainment partnerships.

The one day convention, held on August 15 at Paradise Event Arena, Yaba, brought together anime fans, gamers, cosplayers, content creators, vendors and entertainment companies for an event, the event featured 42 commercial booths alongside gaming tournaments, screenings, performances and industry discussions.

AniWeCon, organised by AniWe Convention, has grown from smaller community gatherings into a wider anime, gaming and pop culture ecosystem. The organisation says its community now includes more than 10,000 anime enthusiasts, over 700 dedicated gamers and more than 200,000 followers, while its activities have expanded to conventions, cinema watch parties, merchandise and online communities.

The growth is also reflected in AniWe’s activities before the 2026 convention. In 2025, the organisation recorded more than 500 attendees at its Solo Leveling watch party in Lagos and Ile-Ife, while its Demon Slayer watch party in Lagos and Abuja was held alongside FilmOne Entertainment and Silverbird Cinemas. AniWe said the Demon Slayer events sold out in both cities, while FilmOne reported N73 million in release-day sales for the film.

At AniWeCon 2026, the commercial side of the community was visible through 42 vendors selling anime merchandise, manga, artwork and apparel. Gaming companies, entertainment businesses and other brands also participated in the event, giving businesses access to an audience built around anime, gaming and wider pop culture.

The convention also included tournaments for titles such as Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Clash Royale, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Naruto Storm 4, alongside virtual reality, racing and arcade gaming zones.

Cosplay was another major part of the programme, with competitions across female, male and group categories. Cindy won the female category for her portrayal of Frieren, while Emmanuel won the male category for his portrayal of Vice-Captain Hoshina from Kaiju No. 8. Akatsuki, a Naruto-inspired group, won the group category.

The event also created a platform for Nigerian creators working around anime and gaming. The AniWe Awards, held as part of the convention, recognised creators, cosplayers, gaming influencers and other members of the community across 21 categories.

The awards attracted 208 nominations from 55 verified nominators, while 6,682 votes were cast by 1,524 voters across the publicly voted categories

Beyond fan activities, AniWeCon also placed the community within a wider entertainment business conversation.

A panel titled “Unlocking Africa-Japan Collaboration in Entertainment” brought together representatives from the Japan-Africa Entertainment Business Council, Africa Comicade, Flocker Records and Comic Republic.

The Japan-Africa Entertainment Business Council’s participation was particularly significant as AniWe continues to position anime as a link between Nigerian audiences and Japanese entertainment businesses. Aoi Torii, co-founder of the council, was among the speakers at the convention, which also featured representatives and content from Japanese organisations including Tokyo Broadcasting System, ABC, Toppan and Tsuburaya Productions.

Tolu Olowofoyekun, co-founder of Kugali Limited, also delivered a keynote on developing locally created intellectual property, while other sessions focused on gaming and the commercial opportunities around the sector.

AniWe’s development follows a broader shift in how anime is consumed in Nigeria. What was once largely associated with online fan communities has increasingly moved into cinemas, live events, merchandise, gaming and creator-led content.

AniWe itself has been building that transition for more than a decade. The organisation traces its community activities to 2013, with conventions and exchanges expanding to university campuses before its Lagos convention in 2023 and the AniWe Village at CAGE24 in 2024. The latter attracted more than 1,000 attendees, according to the organisation.

For businesses, that expansion creates several points of entry beyond ticket sales. Vendors can sell merchandise directly to fans, gaming companies can use tournaments and demonstrations to reach players, creators can build audiences around anime content, while film distributors can use organised fan communities to drive cinema attendance.

The participation of Japanese entertainment organisations at AniWeCon also points to another opportunity: connecting Nigeria’s growing audience for Japanese popular culture with the companies that own, distribute and develop the intellectual property behind it.

With the number of participants attending its latest convention and a community that now extends into cinema, gaming, merchandise and digital content, AniWe is showing that anime in Nigeria is moving beyond a fan interest into an organised entertainment market.
