Two years ago, the “This is an Xbox” marketing campaign and the company’s pivot to releasing former Xbox exclusives on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch suggested that even Xbox Game Pass could have launched on these systems. The company has since changed course under the leadership of Asha Sharma, but, funnily enough, one component of the subscription service, namely cloud gaming, did indeed debut on PlayStation 5, albeit in an unofficial capacity.
PSBOX Cloud Gaming is a “native Xbox Cloud Gaming client for jailbroken PS5 consoles: browse the cloud catalog and stream games at 1080p60, with the DualSense as an Xbox controller,” as described by the client’s official description on GitHub. To access the Xbox Cloud Gaming library and stream games from local Xbox consoles, users only need to sign in on their phones when prompted.
The PSBOX Cloud Gaming client for jailbroken PlayStation 5 systems also comes with additional features, including 4K upscaling an in-game menu with statistics, picture options, stream resolution, with the system’s keyboard also available for games’ text fields
Although Xbox Cloud Gaming is soon going to be a less enticing proposition than before due to time limitations coming to all Xbox Game Pass subscription tiers next month, it’s undeniable how ironic it seems to see the service become available in some capacity on PlayStation 5 once the “This is an Xbox” marketing campaign has been buried for good.
This homebrew client, much like every recent development in PlayStation 5 modding, including native PlayStation 3 emulation, seems to be a consequence of some of Sony‘s most questionable decisions, such as sunsetting disc production in 2028. However, as these initiatives remain niche and limited to jailbroken systems, it’s unlikely they are going to make the company revert some of its decisions.
