Psychological horror has captured a lot of my attention lately, especially when creators find ways to make something as intangible as trauma feel genuinely terrifying. Whitewall: The Graphic Novel immediately caught my attention for exactly that reason. Created by Devin Kraft, the 144-page graphic novel follows Scout, a young doctor who dives into the minds of soldiers to treat the psychological wounds left behind by an endless war. When her mentor Isao is infected by a vicious psychic entity, Scout has no choice but to enter his mind herself.
If that premise isn’t enough, take a look at the preview pages. The contrast between bleak battlefields and surreal mindscapes is incredible, turning trauma into haunting memories and monstrous entities. From what I’ve seen so far, Whitewall looks like the kind of graphic novel that understands exactly how to make psychological horror work. If surreal science fiction and stories about the human cost of war sound like your kind of comic, this is absolutely worth looking into.

There are few things more dangerous than a young witch trying to prove herself, but giving her a cat as a familiar probably isn’t helping. Cat and the Covenis a 40-page comic and the fourth installment in the Cat and series and follows a young witch apprentice as she begins the tests required to become a full-fledged witch. Unfortunately for her, her first test involves choosing a familiar, and that means bringing the Cat into the mix. If Bone, Calvin & Hobbes, and Sam & Max sound like your kind of comics, this is absolutely worth looking into.

A Great British comic anthology just like you used to read in the 70’s and 80’s – now in its’ 20th year!
PARAGON #39 is a celebration of classic British anthology comics, continuing a tradition that has lasted for 20 years. This issue brings together several ongoing stories, giving readers plenty of variety across its pages. Jikan, the time-travelling, demon-hunting samurai, returns to continue his hunt for the demon queen Shimasu. Spencer Nero, meanwhile, finds himself falling into Tartarus and searching for a way out. Bludd and Xandi also return as their story unfolds between Heaven and Hell.

A dystopian sci-fi odyssey from the edge of reality itself.
If you are looking for a new science-fiction universe to dive into, DARK SYSTEM :: VOLUME ONE certainly makes a strong first impression. The 88-page graphic novel follows disgraced detective Arcadia Quintana as she investigates a mysterious crime on the edge of an interdimensional frontier. What begins as a murder investigation quickly expands into a much larger mystery involving humanity’s first contact with the Dark System and the secrets surrounding an uneasy peace. Written by Matt Peek and illustrated by Mito Cubic, the book draws from European sci-fi albums while mixing cosmic horror, military science fiction, and interstellar politics. There is plenty here to catch the attention of sci-fi fans looking for something ambitious and creator-owned.
