After renewing Wonder Man for Season 2, Marvel has retracted its initial decision and ended the show for good.
It shouldn’t be surprising considering that networks walking back renewal decisions is a tale as old as time (after all, that Dexter: Original Sin cancellation last year broke our hearts!).
But the end of Wonder Man might mark a turning point for this larger superhero franchise.
Wonder Man has been one of the best things to come out of the MCU in recent years, and this cancellation has me worried about the direction Marvel is heading in.
The studio’s lack of faith in one of its most impressive series has me wondering if Marvel is slowly moving out of TV — a decision that might not be the best move.

Confronting the Truth About Marvel
When Marvel first entered the realm of TV full-time in 2021, I had high hopes thanks to the strong start of its impressive slate.
I enjoyed how WandaVision played around with the sitcom form and tuned into The Falcon and The Winter Soldierweek after week. Even Loki had its moments.
But by the mid 2020s, Marvel started struggling on the film end and began slipping on its TV shows.
I barely heard a word about Ironheart, which had been a highly anticipated follow-up to the Black Panther 2 film.
Same goes for Daredevil: Born Again, which is a revival of one of the most beloved Marvel TV shows.
Spider-Noir also had a really fascinating concept, especially with how it utilized the black-and-white detective noir aesthetic, but Marvel didn’t seem to push it as hard as it had at the beginning of its TV venture.
There are many factors influencing the lack of fanfare around Marvel shows, including general superhero fatigue from audiences, declining quality across Marvel content, and the franchise’s desire to expand.
But Wonder Man’s cancellation seemed to sting in particular.
It’s been one of the only Marvel shows worth tuning into in recent years because it tells a compelling story about an actor struggling to break into Hollywood.
Wonder Man offers a unique angle on the struggles of pursuing your greatest dreams.
It excelled in how it still positioned Simon as deeply human and flawed despite his superpowers, which I think not a lot of superhero shows successfully do without veering into dark, angsty implications.
We saw Simon wrestle with his desire to be himself and his desire to fit what others wanted from him throughout the show, and that push and pull was captivating to watch.

Plus, the combination of Destin Daniel Cretton’s creative direction and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s incredible acting made for the perfect storm.
After seeing that Wonder Man received an Emmy nomination in the comedy category, I really believed that Marvel might be back in the TV show world.
But the seemingly abrupt cancellation after what seemed like a guaranteed renewal has crushed my spirits.
Is It Just Superhero Fatigue?
Marvel is far from being the only superhero franchise that has been struggling in recent years.
Although DC originally had a promising slate under James Gunn’s direction, the last season of Peacemaker didn’t live up to its first.
Similarly, the latest seasons of The Boys and its spinoffs have slowly lost the support of its once loyal fanbase.

While some might argue that it’s a clear sign for TV shows to move away from superheroes, I’d actually say that the problem isn’t just oversaturation but specifically telling unique stories.
That’s why I loved Wonder Man so much — it wasn’t just a great superhero series; it had a new story.
Marvel’s ability to fill a missing niche in television suggests the franchise still has the potential to salvage its reputation.
If it had more concentrated rather than wider efforts to build out its TV show slate, the studio could move the needle in terms of what we can expect from superhero shows.
However, the cancellation of Wonder Man indicates that Marvel is walking back on the TV show front, as it doesn’t even seem to be willing to invest in a show that has gained so much positive attention.
While we have to wait to see what VisionQuest, the next Marvel show coming out, is like, I’m not feeling great about the MCU staying in TV.
