VisionQuest is “very much a sequel to WandaVision,” says showrunner

At D23, VisionQuest creator Terry Matalas dished on how the Paul Bettany Disney+ show will complete the trilogy that began with WandaVision

It’s been five years since WandaVision began streaming on Disney+, and I’ll give you five minutes to process that. Since then, Vision fans have been wondering when they’ll next be seeing Paul Bettany as the android Avenger in the MCU. Luckily for all of us, Vision is returning (with his “peepaw” Ultron) in VisionQuest this fall to finish out the trilogy of Marvel Television projects set up by WandaVision and Agatha All Along.

Now, since the trailer of VisionQuest was unveiled at Disney’s D23 expo, the anticipation for the show has grown. With Scarlet Witch’s future in the MCU looking uncertain, VisionQuest is the closest thing that Wanda fans can get to seeing their favorite tragic heroine.

“The Vision is an Avenger. To be able to continue that story – it’s definitely the third part of a trilogy, but it’s very much a sequel to WandaVision,” Terry Matalas said in conversation with Fandango’s Natasha Martinez at D23. “Because the last moment we saw of Vision was getting access to his memories again and saying, ‘I am Vision’ and flying off. You could even look at him, he’s a blank canvas now. How much of him is the old Vision, how much of him is something else? And that’s something he’s struggling with.”

Matalas’s question of “How much of him is the old Vision, how much of him is something else?” taps into the central idea behind the MCU’s version of Vision. Let’s remember, the MCU’s Vision was created partly from Ultron and partly from J.A.R.V.I.S., but he’s also his own being. When he debuted in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Vision had to convince the Avengers that he was more than just Ultron’s progeny, though the nature of his split “heritage,” if we can call it that, has yet to be explored in depth.

Thankfully, VisionQuest will be here soon to round out this saga that has been building over the past decade.

VisionQuest will begin streaming on October 14, 2026.
