The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards was a Taylor Swift takeover — with a side of Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.
Swift debuted her “Patient Zero” music video during Sunday’s awards show, three days after revealing the A-list cast. As the pop star concluded her acceptance speech for the inaugural Artist Director Honors, she announced the world premiere of her latest visual, “starring my friend Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.”
The besties star as women who bond over a man (Farrell), Swift’s ex and Johnson’s current boyfriend. Throughout the cinematic video, the two twin in matching outfits as Swift “mentors” Johnson through the turbulent relationship, which is made worse by Johnson feeling mysteriously ill. In the end, it’s revealed he’s poisoning her just like he did previously to Swift.
Swift attended Sunday’s ceremony to accept the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors. The award was created to recognize artists whose directorial work has advanced the art of music video and storytelling. Throughout her career, Swift has directed several of her own music videos, starting with “The Man” in 2019.
Since her very first music video 20 years, Swift estimated she had starred in 60 — 18 of which she wrote and directed. “You, the fans, make it so much fun,” the singer gushed. “You make it so rewarding because you actually care about what we’re making.”
Prior to Sunday’s awards show, Swift had fans in a frenzy with several announcements starting on Sept. 22 with the reveal that “Patient Zero” would be her next single. The song, which dropped on Friday, was one of four new tracks Swift released on her The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore album. The other three tunes were titled Pink Clouding,” “Babylon,” and “Cleveland!”
“About a year ago, you guys did a truly unfathomable thing. Something that completely blew my mind,” she wrote on Instagram on Sept. 23. “You gave The Life of a Showgirl the biggest first week for an album in history. I took a trip to Sweden to celebrate with Max and Shellback, my two collaborators on this album.”
She added, “Really we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in, but there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs. I hope you love them, because they were born out of pure gratitude for your exuberance for and celebration of the album we made.”

Swift initially released The Life of a Showgirl on Oct. 3, 2025, and it broke records, becoming the fastest-selling album in history.
“I have such an eye on legacy when I’m making my music,” Swift told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe when discussing the record last year. “I know what I made. I know I adore it, and I know that on the theme of what the showgirl is, all of this is part of it.”
