The Star Entertainment Group (ASX:SGR) has rallied as investors digest full-year results that, beneath a large statutory loss, point to a Business showing signs of stabilisation after several difficult years. While the casino operator remains under significant regulatory and financial pressure, a sharply narrower underlying Earnings loss and a strengthened Balance Sheet have encouraged renewed interest in one of Australia’s most closely watched turnaround stories.

Star reported a statutory net loss of A$307.3 million for FY26, covering the year ended 30 June 2026.

Normalised Revenue was approximately A$1.1 billion, down 2.2%, while the normalised EBITDA loss narrowed to A$16.1 million from A$76.2 million a year earlier.

Cash stood at A$267 million at 30 June 2026, providing the group with greater Liquidity following a series of balance-sheet measures.

Star refinanced its Debt through a US$390 million secured term Loan from WhiteHawk Capital Partners, which is due in May 2029. The company also completed a A$300 million EquityInvestment from Bally’s and Investment Holdings and eliminated a A$700 million Destination Brisbane guarantee.

Corporate costs declined by A$75 million during the year. No Dividend was declared.

Star’s recovery remains subject to substantial regulatory and financial risks.

Auditors have flagged material uncertainties around the group’s ability to continue as a going concern, including uncertainty surrounding a potential AUSTRAC civil penalty, the suspended Sydney casino licence and compliance with debt covenants.

The statutory loss remains significant and normalised revenue declined during FY26. The absence of a dividend also means investors are currently relying primarily on a potential recovery in the company’s operations and balance sheet rather than income returns.

Regulatory decisions could have a major impact on the group’s financial position and operating structure. The recovery therefore remains far from assured.

    What Could Come Next?

Clarity around the potential AUSTRAC civil penalty will be an important milestone for Star.

The status of the Sydney casino licence will also remain central to the investment case, alongside continued trading updates that indicate whether the improved early-FY27 performance can be sustained.

Progress on debt-covenant compliance and further balance-sheet measures could provide additional evidence of financial stabilisation.

Investors will also monitor the performance and development of the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane precinct, which remains an important component of Star’s broader operating portfolio.

Star Entertainment has gained as investors look beyond its A$307.3 million statutory loss toward a substantially narrower underlying EBITDA loss, improved liquidity and encouraging early-FY27 trading.

The completed refinancing and A$300 million equity investment have strengthened the company’s financial position, while lower corporate costs provide another positive factor.

However, the turnaround remains dependent on unresolved regulatory and financial issues, particularly the potential AUSTRAC penalty, the Sydney casino licence and going-concern uncertainties.

The next phase of the story will depend on whether improved trading can continue while Star addresses its regulatory obligations and strengthens its balance sheet.
