    Key Points

    • Ryan Phillippe looked back at his marriage to ex-wife Reese Witherspoon.

    • He recently recalled the “wild night” they shared at the 2006 Oscars.

    • The couple were married from 1999 to 2007 and share two kids.

Ryan Phillippe shared a rare memory from his marriage to Reese Witherspoon.

The 52-year-old recently described having an “out-of-body, out-of-mind experience” at the 2006 Oscars after he and Witherspoon celebrated major wins.

“It was a wild night altogether because my wife at the time, Reese Witherspoon, also won Best Actress,” Phillippe said while appearing on Live With Kelly and Mark on Wednesday. “While she was backstage giving her post-award interviews, they called Best Picture for Crash.”

That year, Witherspoon had received an award for her role as June Carter Cash in Walk the Line. Meanwhile, as he joined his Crash costars on stage, Phillippe recalled the excitement he felt meeting Morgan Freeman, who he said presented the award for Best Picture. (Editor’s note: Jack Nicholson presented the Oscar for Best Picture in 2006, while Freeman presented the award for Best Supporting Actress.)

“I had never met Morgan Freeman, so I fanned out on stage at the Oscars,” he admitted. “I’m like, ‘I’ve always wanted to meet you, sir,’ and this is while the producer is accepting the award. Kind of a funny moment.”

And the night didn’t stop there, as Phillippe and Witherspoon left the ceremony and danced until dawn celebrating their wins.

“We had such a fun after-party,” he said, noting that they stayed up “until probably 5 or 6 in the morning.”

The couple, who married in 1999, split shortly after this moment, announcing their separation that October. They finalized their divorce in October 2007, although they have remained amicable co-parents to their children Ava, 27, and Deacon, 22.

Phillippe and Witherspoon reunited at Deacon’s college graduation from New York University earlier this year. They were snapped sitting next to each other at the ceremony and taking pictures of their son.

And as Deacon and Ava pursue careers in the entertainment industry, Phillippe has been open about how he has tried to give them guidance wherever possible.

“They make really good choices and we’re there to be sounding boards and to guide and to offer advice,” he told E! News in February. “Now that the oldest two of mine are kind of moving into the industry in certain capacities, it’s nice to offer your experience.”
