Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story, an adaptation of Aito Aoyagi’s fairy-tale mystery book series, is now in production, with Itsuro Kawasaki directing the anime series for animation studio BENTEN Film, with a planned 2027 release.
Aoyagi’s books follow a girl name Red Riding Hood who solves various crimes and mysteries during her travels in the fairy tale world. The book series has more than 600,000 copies in circulation and already produced a manga adaptation and a Netflix live-action film, which Pony Canyon said was the first Japanese film to rank No. 1 on Netflix’s Weekly Global Top 10
Yume Miyamoto voices Red Riding Hood; Akira Sekine voices Pinocchio. Kawasaki previously directed Yokoso Scooby-Doo!, a Warner Bros. Animation‘s anime series, which runs on Tubi in North America and on Cartoon Network internationally. Manami Minakata and Yuko Yahiro designed the characters. Art direction is by Izumi Hoki and Hiroshi Kato, color setting by Tomoe Yoshimura, composition direction by Rieko Koike and editing by Daisuke Hiraki. BENTEN Film previously handled animation production on Petals of Reincarnation, which premiered on HIDIVE in April.
“Now that I’ve actually started working on the anime production, I’ve encountered various challenges, not only drawing the characters, but also explaining the magic tricks and matching the scenes to the setting,” Kawasaki said.
“The great detective Red Riding Hood and her goofy assistant Pinocchio embark on a grand adventure of mystery and deduction in a world of wonder,” Aoyagi said. “Awaiting them are a multitude of tricks unique to fairy tales, set by cunning culprits.”
