PS VR2 Is Out of Stock in the US, and Best Buy’s Only New Units Cost $855

What US retailers show

VR.org checked the big US chains on Friday morning. Best Buy lists the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle as unavailable from Best Buy itself. Its Marketplace sellers, who are third parties, want $855.20 and $894.00 for the same box. A refurbished headset from those sellers starts at $549. Walmart’s first page of results is all pre-owned, from $369.99 to $449. GameStop shows pre-owned and certified refurbished units only. PC Guide’s September 16 sweep found Amazon selling used units only.

So the cheapest refurbished PS VR2 at Best Buy costs $150 more than Sony’s own list price for a new one.

The gap looks American. Sony’s UK store lists the headset at £399.99 with a working Add to Cart button, and PC Guide found many other regions unaffected.

No word from Sony

Sony has not explained it. PC Guide got no comment, and nothing on the PlayStation Blog addresses stock. A restock is possible. So is a quiet end to new US sales. Neither has any evidence behind it yet.

The only relevant history is two years old. In March 2024, Bloomberg reported that Sony had paused PS VR2 production after building “well over 2 million units” against slowing sales, with surplus stock sitting “throughout Sony’s supply chain,” as Road to VR summarized it. Sony cut the price to $399 in early 2025. VR.org has found no report since saying production restarted. If it never did, a US channel running dry is what a sold-through backlog would look like. That is an inference, not a finding.

Bad timing for the value case

In May, VR.org called PS VR2 the best hardware value in VR. The reasoning was specific. The headset has no onboard memory, so the chip shortage that pushed every Quest up on April 19 never touched it. The Quest 3S went to $349.99. The Quest 3 went to $599.99. PS VR2 stayed at $399, with OLED panels, eye tracking and headset haptics.

The math still holds. The headset just cannot be bought new at that price in the US right now.

The fall calendar makes that worse. Into the Radius 2 moved its PS VR2 release to October 8, and Bad Inmatelands on PS VR2 and Quest on October 15. Existing owners are fine. Anyone planning a first PS5 VR setup for the holidays is not.

What a US buyer should do

Skip the Marketplace listings. At $855.20, the bundle costs $255 more than a new Quest 3. A certified refurbished unit from a seller that stands behind it, such as GameStop, is the reasonable fallback for someone who needs one now. Everyone else should wait for Sony to restock or to say something. The Quest 3S remains $349.99 on Meta’s store for buyers who do not need a PS5 in the loop.
