Johnny Depp returned to the San Diego Comic-Con stage on Friday, making a surprise appearance to introduce his upcoming film, Ebenezer, marking one of his biggest fan convention appearances in years.
Depp joined the Hall H presentation alongside the creative team behind the film, giving fans an early look at the ambitious reimagining of Charles Dickens’ iconic A Christmas Carol. In Ebenezer, Depp takes on the role of the infamous Ebenezer Scrooge in what promises to be a darker, more psychological take on the classic holiday tale.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ti West (X, Pearl, MaXXXine) from a screenplay by Nathaniel Halpern, the film explores the man behind one of literature’s most recognizable characters, offering audiences “the name you know, the story you don’t.”
The impressive ensemble cast includes Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Charlie Murphy, Tramell Tillman, and Ian McKellen, with producer Emma Watts overseeing the project.
Depp’s appearance generated one of Friday’s biggest reactions at Comic-Con, with fans packing the presentation to catch a glimpse of the actor and learn more about the highly anticipated film. While details about the story remain tightly under wraps, the Hall H crowd was treated to an exclusive first look that teased the film’s haunting atmosphere and gothic visual style.

The project also marks another intriguing collaboration between Depp and genre filmmaking, with West bringing his signature blend of suspense and striking visuals to the beloved Dickens tale.
Ebenezer is set to arrive in theaters this November, just in time for the holiday season, though audiences should expect something far different from the traditional Christmas story they’ve come to know.
