Nintendo gave fans a double-dose of fun this week with a Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct and a traditional Nintendo Direct. The Zelda Direct showed off a variety of initiatives to celebrate 4 decades of Zelda, but the bulk of the presentation focused on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Switch 2. Not surprisingly, people showed up from all around the world to watch, and in some seriously impressive numbers.
According to a report from The Game Business and LevelUp Analytics, the Zelda Direct pulled in some serious viewership. According to their figures, the Zelda Direct reached a peak of 2.1 million viewers, which shows that an insane amount of people are interested in seeing how Ocarina of Time has been reshaped for today’s generation. That figure is impressive in and of itself, but it gets even more remarkable with comparisons.
Sony just held a PlayStation State of Play event last week, which is basically the Sony equivalent of a Nintendo Direct. According to figures from the samehe Zelda Direct more than doubled the audience. With that said, things get even crazier when you compare it to the viewership of Gamescom Opening Night Live
Gamescom has basically filled the void of E3, and it is by far the game industry’s biggest event. Gamescom brings with it an Opening Night Live stream, which is a 2-hour affair filled with new game reveals and more. People tune in in droves to watch the showcase, and this year’s presentation topped out at 2 million peak viewership. While it’s a slim margin, seeing the Zelda Direct surpass Gamescom’s premiere showcase is all kinds of bonkers!
