The PlayStation 5 Pro is the most powerful console on the market, and it hasn’t failed to show time and time again how its ray tracing capabilities and PSSR upscaler can make a lot of difference compared to the base system. And with the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine, the current-generation refresh shows even more of its ray tracing prowess, as it is capable to handle the game’s most advanced ray tracing effects with a negligible hit to performance.
A new comparison video put together by ElAnalistaDeBits puts the game running on base PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro side by side, highlighting the differences. The most notable are rendering resolution between the different display modes, which internally drops from 2160p–1440p in Fidelity mode to 1440p–1080p in Performance mode, reflections, and shadows. In terms of image quality, the PlayStation 5 Pro wins hands down thanks to PSSR and certain reflections and global illumination details in Advanced RT mode.
As some ray-traced effects can be very demanding, one may be tempted to turn Advanced RT mode off on PlayStation 5 Pro to achieve the best performance, which can hit up to 100 FPS in Performance mode and Unlimited VRR. However, as ElAnalistaDeBits notes, the performance hit is negligible, around 3 to 4 FPS, so there’s little reason not to have them on on the system.
The PlayStation 5 Pro showing once again how good it is at handling ray tracing in recent games, such as Marvel’s Wolverine, bodes extremely well for Grand Theft Auto6, which is going to make ample use of RT to deliver one of the most stunning open worlds ever seen. While the game developed by Rockstar Games is most likely not going to run at 60 FPS on the system, trading performance for 4K resolution, it is definitely going to look the most stunning on it, making it the system to get to enjoy Grand Theft Auto 6 at its best ahead of its PC release, which may not be so far from release as some may think.
