Macronix, the main producer of physical Nintendo cartridges, announced today that it’s quitting the business.
Macronix has been producing ROM chips for the original Nintendo Switch for years, and that had continued with Switch 2. But today, the company made it known that there will be no new ROM products. Q3 is the last quarter it reports ROM sales separately.
In its financial report, Macronix said ROM fell to 5 percent of its sales. A year ago, it was at 26 percent. Macronix’s chairman noted that capacity is limited and is going to NOR and eMMC memory chips instead.
Analyst David Gibson, who shared the news, pointed out that Macronix isn’t Nintendo’s only game memory card maker. In other words, collectors don’t have to worry yet about physical games being phased out – at least not yet.
Gibson also mentioned that digital sales are rising for Nintendo – this is something that we’ve seen with other companies, but at a higher rate. Between April and June, digital accounted for 61.5 percent of Nintendo’s software sales, which is an increase from 59.3 percent the previous year.
It’s worth noting that this figure can move around a bit. Gibson said that the percentage of Nintendo’s software sales has been in the range of 46.1 percent to 67.2 percent in the past year. Big physical launches can impact the figure.
