A new Nintendo Switch 2 exploit could open up the way for the first homebrew software

While Nintendo continues to double down on the Switch 2 security with consistent firmware updates, the modding scene for the current-generation system by the Japanese company has hit a significant milestone earlier this month, as developer Gezine has uncovered a userland exploit for both the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 that bypasses the biggest limitations of existing entry points, making it more possible than ever before for the first homebrew software to run on the system.

As reported by Nintendo Everything today, developer Gezine confirmed the breakthrough on X. “I created Switch 1/2 userland exploit that is not webkit or save exploit,” the developer said. This new exploit is different from those that have already been developed so far, as “existing userland exploit is based on save exploit which can’t be used without save transfer using Nintendo Online Service.” Because transferring these modified save files requires connecting to the Nintendo Switch Online service, users are forced to update to the latest system firmware, which likely patches the vulnerabilities that homebrew software may exploit.

While this new userland exploit on its own isn’t a full Nintendo Switch 2 jailbreak, it is still significant, as it provides a solid starting point the homebrew scene needs, potentially opening the door to local save file backups, retro emulation on the go, and basic homebrew software. And seeing what has been possible to achieve on a modded Nintendo Switch, includingrunning PC versions of games such as Final Fantasy VII Remake, there’s plenty of reasons to be excited by this new development.
