Nintendo has offered a behind-the-scenes look at the development of Nintendo Classics, the Nintendo Switch Online service.
According to a recent interview, the project is handled by teams across Japan and overseas. Nintendo’s Japanese offices oversee development direction, while international teams contribute to programming, feature implementation, localization, and testing.
One of the highlights was the creation of the new “View/Change Controls” feature for Nintendo Switch 2, which allows players to customize their button layouts for classic games. Nintendo said the feature was still in development ahead of early GameCube demonstrations for the public, which required them to prioritize the main functions before its launch.
To improve collaboration on this feature across different time zones and languages, Nintendo provided development hardware to overseas offices and used screen sharing and online play sessions to help teams communicate more effectively. The team also used explanations in English during online matches to strengthen proximity between professionals.
Nintendo noted that project management varies depending on the needs of each game and development stage. Teams have to adjust their priorities and workflows to keep projects moving smoothly.
