New ‘Come to Brasil’ Documentary Celebrates the Power of Brazilian Music Fans

The phrase “Come to Brasil,” which has become one of the internet’s biggest memes, serves as the starting point for the new documentary Come to Brasil. Running 22 minutes, the film delves into the passion, creativity and cultural influence of Brazilian fandoms, revealing the stories behind a phrase that has transcended social media and become part of global pop culture.

Filmed in Rio de Janeiro, the documentary is a coproduction between Discordia, based in Los Angeles, and Cosmocine, based in Brazil. The film follows four superfans to show how generations of Brazilians have built communities around international artists and helped transform the country into one of the most engaged music markets.

More than just explaining the origin of the famous phrase, the documentary shows how Brazilian fans have become key players in the relationship between artists and their audience. The film portrays communities dedicated to artists such as Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Madonna, highlighting the creativity, mobilization and impact of these groups both on and off social media.

According to director and producer Lina Abascal, the goal was to humanize a community that is often portrayed in a stereotypical way. “Like all my work, Come to Brasilis, above all, a story about community,” she says. “It’s about people whose passion has become impossible to ignore and whose voices have helped shape global pop culture.”

Abascal adds that one of the documentary’s goals was to portray the fans with respect: “They’re often seen as crazy. My intention was to show the humanity behind that collective outcry and to take the fandom — which is often made up of women and LGBTQIA+ people — seriously.”

In addition to Abascal as director, the documentary was produced by Gia Rigoli, Vero Kompalic, Tadeu Bijos, Isabel Vallenilla and the filmmaker herself. The executive producers include Alexandra Dale, Justin Lacob, Emiliana Ammirata, Bernardo Portella, Esteban Zuluaga, Guilherme Meirelles and Frankie Greek.

Gemma Doll-Grossman served as director of photography, Dri Sommer as editor and Noah Greene as visual effects artist. The project is presented by Discordia and Cosmocine, in association with Rolling Stone Films, XTR and Documentary+.

Prior to Come to Brasil, Abascal directed the award-winning short film Stud Country, which was part of the LA Times Short Docs series in 2024.

Focusing on the personal stories of its characters, Come to Brasilinvites the audience to look beyond the meme and understand why Brazil has established itself as one of the most influential fan communities in the world.
