The coin, available from the Royal Australian Mint, will be available

The coin features the beloved character Rusty, who starred in the much-loved Cricket episode · Australian Mint

The Royal Australian Mint has released a new Bluey coin, based on the much-watched ‘Cricket’ episode from the animated children’s series. The colourful coin features Rusty, an impressive batter in the show, who hits a ball while Bluey cheers on from the field behind him.

The Mint says there‘s nothing like a game of cricket to bring people together, and this is how one of Australia’s favourite cartoon families is taking the game from the backyard to a coin collection. Chief executive Emily Martin said this latest collectible is a playful celebration of two things Australians love: Bluey and cricket.

The EQL Ballot for the coin opens tomorrow, Friday September 18, at 8.30am and will close at the same time on Monday.

“This colourful coin brings together the fun of cricket with the heart and humour of Bluey, celebrating the friendships, teamwork and memories that make playing together so special,” Martin says.

BBC Studios Director of Brands and Licensing for Australia and New Zealand, Sharon Wilson, said the Cricket episode remains a fan-favourite, with Rusty being one of the show’s most beloved characters.

“We’re thrilled to see Rusty featured on this collectible coin from the Royal Australian Mint, celebrating the magic of backyard cricket and the friendships, family moments and memories that make the game so special,” Wilson said.

The coin will be available as both a $1 uncirculated coin in card ($25) and $1 silver proof coin in a special cricket ball tin ($112.50).

    Coin collectors aplenty

There’s more than 7.6 million collectors in Australia as of 2025

In its report with eBay, the State of Collectables 2025, found coins had officially become Australia’s most collected item.

There is also, perhaps surprisingly, an almost-even gender split in collectors, with 51 per cent being male and 48 per cent female.

For one in five collectors (19 per cent), it’s primarily a financial endeavour as opposed to a recreational one.

Coins from the Mint are limited in their mintage, hence the need for a ballot before a new coin’s release.

There are 200,000 of the Bluey $1 uncirculated coin in card available, and only 20,000 of the silver proof coin in the cricket ball tin.

The Mint’s chief executive Emily Martin got to meet Bluey and Bingo before the new coin’s release. · Supplied
