The Naruto franchise has several new projects in development. During its panel at New York Comic Con 2026, creator Masashi Kishimoto announced a new manga provisionally titled Shadow Rising, an animated crossover with the 1990s series Ninku, and an update on the upcoming live-action film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton.
The new manga was one of the panel’s main announcements, although its story and characters remain under wraps. Kishimoto is directly involved in the project, and fans will have to wait a little longer for more information. According to the official teaser on YouTube, additional details will be revealed during the Naruto Super Stage at Jump Festa 2027.

Naruto and Ninku join forces in a new animated crossover
The panel also revealed Naruto x Ninku, an animated crossover bringing together two manga and anime properties. “Team 7 members Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura are given a mission by Kakashi,” an official description for Naruto x Ninku said. “Since Kakashi cannot participate himself, Naruto is appointed acting leader. As a result of this decision, Naruto is fully motivated to make the mission a success. However, on the way, Team 7 finds themselves lost in another world. What appears before the bewildered trio is a boy with a face resembling a frog’s, named Fūsuke. What awaits them in this strange new world?”
The crossover brings together characters from the two franchises, with Noriyuki Abe directing and Tetsuya Nishio handling character designs. Kishimoto and Ninku creator Koji Kiriyama will supervise the project, according to the official Naruto social media accounts.

Destin Daniel Cretton shares an update on the live-action Naruto movie
Beyond the manga and anime announcements, the panel offered an update on the live-action Naruto film. Director Destin Daniel Cretton shared a message with attendees, expressing his appreciation for the opportunity to bring Kishimoto’s world to the big screen.
“The further we get into making this film, the more excited I am about what we’re creating,” he continued. “What I’ve always loved about Naruto is that he’s the character who might normally get sidelined as a sidekick. He’s excitable, he tries too hard, and people underestimate him. But he has an incredible heart. No matter how many times he fails or gets knocked down, he never stops believing in himself or fighting for the people he loves. That spirit is at the heart of the story we’re telling.”

Cretton also discussed the qualities he wants to preserve in the film’s portrayal of Naruto. Although the young ninja can be impulsive and is often underestimated by others, his determination, heart and refusal to give up are central to the character. Cretton emphasized that these traits will remain at the core of the story. “What an honor it is to bring Kishimoto-sensei’s incredible world and characters to life.”
