Creating Comics: Alex Segura’s “Marvel’s Mastering the Art of Comics” out in October

Random House Worlds will publish Marvel’s Mastering the Art of Comics in October, a new book by comics writer Alex Segura designed for anyone who wants to dive into the unique magic that makes Marvel comic books tick.

Scheduled for release on Tuesday 20th October Marvel’s Mastering the Art of Comics is intended as a practical guide featuring expert insights from Marvel’s top writers, artists, and editors.

Alex Segura is the bestselling and award-winning author of Secret Identity, which the New York Times called “wittily original” and named an Editors’ Choice. His work includes the YA superhero adventure Araña/Spider-Man 2099: Dark Tomorrow, the follow-up to Secret Identity, Alter Ego, and the sci-fi/espionage thriller, Dark Space (with Rob Hart).

He’s also the author of Star Wars Poe Dameron: Free Fall, the Pete Fernandez Miami Mystery series, and a number of comic books, including The Mysterious Micro-Face (in partnership with NPR), The Black Ghost, The Archies, The Dusk: The Emergence, The Awakened, and more.

Two of his most recent books are Marvel: The Art of Daredevil: The Illustrated History, released last year, and Enemy of My Enemy, a Daredevil-focused novel that continues the Marvel Crime series that began with Lisa Jewell’s Breaking the Dark, in which Matt Murdock defends the Punisher in the trial of the century, the murder of the Kingpin, while by night Daredevil staves off a war of succession for the throne of the criminal underworld.

In addition to writing comics, Segura has worked in publicity, marketing, and editorial, and has taught classes about pitching comics, making him an ideal author for this project.

The book delves into what makes a Marvel comic book so special and asks, How can you recreate that Marvel magic to hook, and hold, a reader from the very first page?

Marvel’s Mastering the Art of Comics will guide you through every step in the process of creating a Marvel-quality comic book, including crafting the perfect pitch, creating compelling characters and origin stories, maximising a scene visually; designing a Marvel-style cover that screams “pick me up to find out what happens!”; and telling a story across panels, pages, and issues; plus, all the technical nuts and bolts of working with a team to execute your vision.

Featuring captivating scenes from X-Men, Daredevil, The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, and more, alongside rich insights, quotes, and Q&As from nearly twenty of the most storied Marvel creators, this step-by-step guide analyses character, story, cover, and panel samples to explore the anatomy of a Marvel comic book, teaching you everything you need to know to create one of your own.

This guide is a Marvel-comics-making master class for the creator who is ready to move beyond basic theory to learn how to bring the page, and their career, to life.

“There’s a special energy to a Marvel book – a sense that anything could happen,” Segura told Marvel.com of Marvel’s Mastering the Art of Comics. “And while things may seem fantastical and supernatural, it’s still happening just outside your window.

“When Marvel approached me about doing a how-to book on how to channel Marvel energy into your own work, I was ecstatic,” he continued. “I also saw it as a way to relay some of the ideas and thoughts I’d gleaned as a reader, friend, and colleague to so many amazing creators and editors.

“This is a book that newcomers will enjoy, but that will also serve as a working handbook for creators looking to infuse their work with the verve and energy of Marvel Comics, from the characters to the setting, and from idea to colors and letters.”

Alex also told Marvel.com he already counts himself among the people who gained knowledge from the book’s contents.

“I learned a lot of technical stuff – but I also learned a lot of instinctual advice that will add a new flavour to my own work. So, in many ways, I was learning as I wrote this – so I can guarantee it’ll work!”
