Marvel and Webtoon have announced the launch of the new Marvel Comics app, a digital comics platform that will include titles from Marvel, <a href="https://comicvibe.com/new-star-wars-attack-of-the-clones-anakin-skywalker-figure-debuts/" title="New Star Wars: Attack of the Clones Anakin Skywalker Figure Debuts”>Star Wars, and 20th Century Studios. The app, built and operated by Webtoon, will replace the Marvel Unlimited app, which is the publisher’s current digital platform.
Per the announcement, the platform will eventually expand to include brands from across the Walt Disney Company portfolio, including Pixar and Disney Animation. The app is the culmination of a deal inked between Disney and Webtoon last September.
The Marvel Comics app will feature more than 35,000 digital comics, including archived titles and current comic book runs, and will support both traditional page-based comics and vertical-scroll formats.
The app officially launches on November 16, but New York Comic Con attendees can get a sneak peek at the beta version at the Marvel booth this weekend.
There will be two subscription tiers for the new app, both available at monthly or yearly rates. The Base tier, at $9.99 monthly or $69.99 annually, provides access to the full Marvel Comics library and new issues three months after their release. The Ultimate tier gives access to new issues only one month after their release, and will go for $12.49 per month or $99.99 per year.
The launch comes as Marvel enters a new era of leadership, and as thebattle for supremacy in the digital comics space continues to heat up. This week also marked the launch of digital comic book marketplace Sweet Shop, as well as Webtoon rival Kakao’s announcement that it is discontinuing its Tapas platform.
“We know that there is a large audience of readers who are looking to experience comics digitally, and there is no richer library than Marvel Comics,” Marvel Comics general manager David Abdo, who was appointed this past May, said in a statement. “We’re excited to partner with Webtoon, industry leaders in the space, to create a new app that can continue to grow and evolve with the way readers discover and experience comics.”
