Kingdom Hearts is officially coming to Fortnite with Sora, Riku, Kairi, and Roxas
Fortnite is finally unlocking the door to Kingdom Hearts, and Epic Games is bringing more than just skins along for the crossover.
Epic Games officially revealed the Fortnite x Kingdom Hearts collaboration in a new trailer posted on X on 15 September, confirming Sora, Riku, Kairi, and Roxas as part of the crossover. More importantly for anyone actually dropping onto the island, Sora’s Keyblade is also becoming a Mythic weapon when Fortnite update 42.20 arrives on 17 September.
The trailer gives the first proper look at the crossover’s key art, character cosmetics, and Keyblade gameplay, including Sora unleashing what appears to be the Kingdom Hearts spell Thundaga. The Keyblade will join the Fortnite loot pool alongside the collaboration.
Kingdom Hearts has actually been waiting in the wings since August, when Sora appeared in the key art for Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override. At the time, Epic only showed Sora and a Keyblade Pickaxe among the season’s upcoming Item Shop crossovers.
Things became much less subtle on 13 September, when Epic confirmed Sora would arrive that week before posting a string of cryptic Kingdom Hearts II quotes on X. The messages pointed towards Sora, Riku, Kairi, and Roxas without naming the full lineup outright, setting up the trailer reveal two days later.
Which Kingdom Hearts characters are coming to Fortnite?
Sora will not be making the jump to Fortnite alone, with Kairi, Riku, and Roxas all joining him as part of the crossover. Each character also brings a Keyblade tied to their Kingdom Hearts appearance, although only Sora’s will double as a Mythic weapon in Fortnite. The others will instead be available as Pickaxes, with Roxas wielding Oathkeeper and Oblivion, Riku getting Way to Dawn, and Kairi carrying Destiny’s Embrace.
All four characters are expected to arrive through the Fortnite Item Shop around the launch of the collaboration, but the crossover does not stop with the character cosmetics. Epic is also adding a pair of Shadow Heartless Kicks, while the trailer shows Kingdom Hearts making a much bigger mark on the island by reshaping Fortnite’s moon into a giant heart. It is unclear how long the change will stick around.
How does the Keyblade Mythic work in Fortnite?
The Keyblade Mythic appears to function as both a melee weapon and a way to cast Thundaga in Fortnite. In the trailer, Sora uses it to unleash a lightning strike over a small area, while the weapon also has a spinning melee attack and seemingly gives its wielder a slight movement boost.
What is less clear is how often Thundaga can be used. The footage suggests the ability may either work on a recharge or have a limited number of charges, although Epic has yet to explain the exact mechanics. It has also not confirmed whether any other Kingdom Hearts spells will be available. The Keyblade Mythic is expected to be obtainable from Rare or Relic Chests inside the Fortnite Temple Vaults once update 42.20 goes live.
The Kingdom Hearts collaboration is set to begin once the Fortnite downtime for update 42.20 ends on 17 September. The character skins could hit the Item Shop alongside the update or after the next shop rotation on 18 September, which is also when the Ironmouse skin in Fortnite is due to release.
