This weekend’s D23, Disney’s biennial fan convention where it announces a slate of upcoming film, TV, and video game projects, hosted a substantial update on Kingdom Hearts IV. We now know the game, first announced in 2022, is coming next year. Square Enix also announced Pixar’s Coco as the game’s first world.

The video game franchise gets the animation adaptation treatment for Disney Channel and Disney+, developed in partnership with the game’s creator Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix.

Square Enix on Saturday (Aug. 15) dropped a new Kingdom Hearts 4trailer that expands on the teaser released on Friday and reveals that Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy will now be playable.

At the D23 Entertainment Showcase panel on Friday, Disney confirmed an original animated Kingdom Hearts series is in development for Disney Channel and Disney+, marking the first time the long-running Square Enix-Disney crossover franchise has been adapted for television, proving rumors true.
