But really, it’s because the Mean Girls alum and The Newsroom actor had been keeping their breakup private.

“We have been separated for a while, and it’s proven to be the right move for us and our family unit,” Seyfried and Sadoski, who share 9-year-old daughter Nina and 5-year-old son Thomas Jr., said in a joint statement to People Sept. 15. “We’ve got each other forever—and it’s GOOD.”

So while Seyfried and Sadoski won’t be writing about each other in a burn book, perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that the news didn’t spread beyond their inner clique. After all, the former couple, who were last photographed together in January, didn’t feel the need to invite the public to sit with them throughout every stage of their nine-year marriage.

But actually, Seyfried and Sadoski’s story together began on the stage when they both starred in the 2015 off-Broadway production of The Way We Get By. However, they were strictly friends as they were both in other relationships at the time: Seyfried was dating fellow actor JustinLong and Sadoski was married to casting director Kimberly Hope.

He “never flirted, never disrespected his wife,” the Mamma Mia! star told NET-A-PORTER’s PORTER magazine in 2018. “That was another reason why I thought, later on, that I could marry him.”

After their respective relationships ended, Seyfried and Sadoski found themselves saying here we go again and costarring in the 2017 movie The Last Word, where they fell in love.

“It was amazing,” she recalled. “It felt healthy and freeing and clean. We can tell the story without any guilt.”

In fact, by the time the movie premiered, Seyfried and Sadoski had revealed they were engagedandexpecting a baby.

“I’m more excited to be a father with Amanda as my partner than I’ve ever been about anything in my entire life,” the Life in Pieces star toldHarry Connick Jr. in February 2017. “I spend a lot of time looking at this bump that’s growing inside of her and looking and talking to that child and going, ‘You have no idea how lucky you are to have a mom like this.’ She’s incredible.”

Just before Nina arrived, Seyfried and Sadoski eloped—forgoing a big wedding reception for brunch at a diner in L.A.

“We got married in Topanga, March last year. Just the two of us,” the Les Misérables actress revealed in her 2018 PORTER interview. “And afterwards, I was like, ‘Can we just go to Cheebo?’ It was awesome.”

And after getting married onscreen in several movies, Seyfried was excited to tie the knot for real without the cameras.

“I get married all the time. I was in a wedding dress last week!” she continued. “I also go to premieres where people take my picture. I just don’t care about all that stuff.”

All Seyfried wanted, she noted, was “to have rings on in the hospital,” which they did when Nina was born later that month.

Thomas Jr. joined the family in September 2020. Together, Seyfried and Sadoski navigated juggling their public-facing careers with their private family life—going back and forth between their New York City apartment, farm upstate and L.A. home.

“It’s a tricky thing negotiating relationships inside the industry and all that sort of stuff,” he admitted on a March 2020 episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show
“But it mostly has to do with parenting and who’s going to be around and what you’re going to do and how close do you want your kids to be to this industry and all of that sort of stuff.”

And it wasn’t always easy. “He sacrifices a lot for me,” Seyfried told Vogue in January. “He also knows that, in this moment, the opportunities I’m being afforded are insane…I do say no a lot.”

Ultimately, Sadoski and Seyfried decided saying no to a future as husband and wife was the best thing for them and their family. And while they’ve yet to give a specific reason for their split, what their statement makes clear is they’ll always have big love for each other.
