Fortnite is offline as Epic Games rolls out Chapter 7, Season 4, titled “Override,” and the new season is shaping up to be one of the game’s biggest crossover events yet.
Epic Games has promised a season built around the slogan “Break the rules, change the game,” with an extraordinary lineup of gaming icons joining the battle royale, Forbes reported.
Among the characters coming to Fortnite are Sonic the Hedgehog, Pac-Man, Crash Bandicoot, Ryu and other Street Fighter characters, Master Chief, Spyro the Dragon, Lara Croft, Mega Man, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, Joker and Morgana from Persona 5, as well as the returning Geralt of Rivia.
The scale of the crossover is particularly notable because Fortnite has already become famous for bringing together characters from across movies, television, comics and gaming.
When will Fortnite Season 4 go live?
Fortnite servers went offline for scheduled maintenance after Season 3 ended, with downtime beginning at 11 p.m. Pacific Time on Aug. 19, or 2 a.m. Eastern Time on Aug. 20.
Epic expected the servers to return after roughly four hours, although the actual launch time could shift depending on the update process.
For players in several regions, the expected Season 4 launch times were:
Pacific Time: 3 a.m. Aug. 20
Eastern Time: 6 a.m. Aug. 20
Brazil: 7 a.m. Aug. 20
UK: 11 a.m. Aug. 20
Central Europe: noon Aug. 20
Turkey: 1 p.m. Aug. 20
UAE: 2 p.m. Aug. 20
India: 3:30 p.m. Aug. 20
China and Singapore: 6 p.m. Aug. 20
Japan and South Korea: 7 p.m. Aug. 20
Australia East: 8 p.m. Aug. 20
New Zealand: 10 p.m. Aug. 20
The game could return earlier or later than these estimates as Epic completes the rollout.
What is new in Fortnite Chapter 7, Season 4?
The new season introduces a heavily altered Island centered around a giant Spire, which has been “hacked” and partially rebooted.
New or updated locations include Geno’s HQ, Green Hill Zone, the Spire, Temple and Pac-Man Island.
Green Hill Zone is arguably the most eye-catching addition. The Sonic-themed area brings familiar elements from the classic franchise into Fortnite, including loops, rings and checkerboard terrain.
Several existing locations are also expected to leave the map, including Calamari Canyon, Frosted Flats and Sinister Strip.
The gameplay changes could be even more significant.
Players will be able to use a Sonic Spin Dash Mythic to move rapidly across the Island, including running up walls and through Green Hill-style loops. A Mega Man Mythic adds the character’s famous arm cannon, complete with a chargeable attack.
Another unusual addition is the Tetrimino Junk Rift, which drops giant Tetris blocks into an area. Fortnite is also introducing an 8-Bit Shotgun, along with the futuristic Masamune AR and Shingen SMG.
The season will feature new Sprites, including Sonic, Tails, Jazz Jackrabbit and Klombo. Tails can provide aerial mobility, while Sonic is focused on speed.
New systems could change entire matches
Epic is also introducing several systems that could affect the rules of an entire Fortnite match.
Loot Hacks allow players to spend Sprite Dust to influence what loot appears. Hacked items have a chance of dropping from opened Chests.
Match Overrides are another major addition. Override Consoles appear in every match and allow players to rewrite the rules for the entire server. Reaching one will not be a secret, however, because the controlling player’s name is displayed around the console.
Then there are Cheat Codes, which can be discovered around the Island, including inside points of interest and on walls. Entering the correct combination can cause a Sprite to appear.
One of the most intriguing mechanics is the new cartridge system. Players can apparently insert cartridges into the Island’s central system to activate modifiers that affect the entire match rather than only the player or squad that triggered them.
That could make individual matches much less predictable.
Sonic gets a major Fortnite debut
The Sonic collaboration arrives as the franchise celebrates its 35th anniversary.
Players can race through Green Hill Zone using Sonic Power Sneakers, which allow a grounded Spin Dash and an airborne Spin Attack.
The Battle Pass also includes Sonic-related content, including Sonic’s Outfit and the Tails Sidekick, alongside a collection of original Fortnite characters.
Sega’s Sonic Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka said the collaboration was designed to bring Sonic’s speed and movement into Fortnite while preserving recognizable elements of the franchise.
Sonic, Knuckles and Shadow will debut as Android versions in Fortnite, while Tails and Dr. Eggman will appear in their classic forms.
The story leading into Season 4 revolves once again around Fortnite’s Zero Point.
During the Aug. 15 “Unstable” Story Moment, Doctor Slone attempted to stabilize the damaged Zero Point. Geno then hacked the stabilizer, took control away from Slone and stole the Zero Point, leaving a game cartridge behind.
That sets up the central conflict of “Override”: players must overcome Geno’s system and reclaim control of the Island.
With the servers now down for the Season 4 update, players are waiting to see how these new mechanics, crossover characters and map changes come together.
If Epic’s new systems work as intended, Override could be one of the most chaotic and unpredictable Fortnite seasons yet.
