Streaming boss Cindy Holland exits Paramount ahead of merger in a sign of HBO streaming future

If we are to glean anything from the exit of a high-profile executive at Paramount, it’s that your subscriptions to HBO Max and Paramount+ are about to change.

The $US110 billion ($154b) Paramount Warner Bros merger deal is still a week away from closing but it’s already claimed a high-profile scalp.

Cindy Holland, who led Paramount’s streaming business, is out, which suggests that the combined company’s two competing platforms, Paramount+ and HBO Max will be fused together sooner rather than later.

HBO Max and Paramount+ currently operate separately in Australia, with their basic, ad-supported plans starting at $9.99 and $7.99 a month respectively.

One subscription fee replacing two might seem like a win for consumers, at least initially, but critics of media consolidation warn against the long-term flow-on effects of diminished market competition.

In her exit email to staff, cited by The Hollywood Reporter, Holland wrote, “(Paramount chief executive) David (Ellison) is optimising for HBO stability as we move into this next chapter, and I fully support that.”

Holland’s future within a merged Paramount Warner Bros was one of the most speculated on given she and HBO boss Casey Bloys were vying for essentially the same job overseeing the combined streaming businesses.

Bloys is considered something of a success whisperer, having worked at HBO for almost 25 years, a period during which the network has become synonymous with premium TV. He has led the charge for the past eight years through several corporate takeovers at the parent company, Warner Bros.

Among the now-legendary TV shows HBO has made during Bloys’ time at the company are Game of Thrones, Chernobyl, Veep, Succession, True Detective and Barry. The upcoming slate includes new seasons of The Pitt, The White Lotus and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms as well as the Harry Potter series.

Holland joined Paramount in August 2025 in the days after Ellison acquired the business for $US8 billion, before he made a play for Warner Bros as well in the months following. She had already been consulting for Ellison at his production company, Skydance.

At the time, Holland’s hiring had made waves in Hollywood because the well-regarded creative executive had been without a top post since she was fired from Netflix in 2020.

Holland had been with Netflix since its early years and led the push into original programming in the early 2010s.

It was her discerning taste and relationships with filmmakers and talent that produced the likes of House of Cards, Bojack Horseman, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Queen’s Gambit, The Crown, Mindhunter, Master of None and Stranger Things.

Her parting from Netflix came as the streamer shifted strategy to a volume business and began to commission more projects that had broad appeal. In other words, it was no longer trying to be HBO.

Bela Bejaria, whose background was in network TV and whose then remit at Netflix was reality and unscripted, took over the head of TV role, before later being elevated to chief content boss.

In her one year at Paramount+, Holland helped lure the Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer away from Netflix to an overall TV and film deal at Paramount.

She also made it known that Paramount+ was open for business, and had ambitions to expand beyond the core verticals the streamer had become known for: network procedurals and masculine dramas from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan.

There was a direct appeal for programming that could draw female viewers. To that end, she had commissioned a legal show with Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning, a thriller with Viola Davis and picked up a Clueless sequel which would bring back Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz.

Holland was the first executive exit but she won’t be the last as the Paramount Warner Bros merger takes shape.

Across the combined business, there are duplicate roles including at the executive level, and the industry is closely watching the fates of Paramount studio heads Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein and their counterparts at Warner Bros, Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca.

Neither pair have a lock on the top film job with both studios’ 2026 output a little shaky.

Staff at both companies are bracing for mass job cuts once the merger completes, which is expected to be next week.

Ellison, backed by his father, tech billionaire Larry Ellison, as well as three Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds, emerged as the victor to buy Warner Bros, one of Hollywood’s legacy studios.

The deal is a leveraged buyout meaning that Paramount Warner Bros will carry $US80 billion in debt. Ellison had promised $US6 billion in “savings” in the short term, which inevitably translates to cuts and retrenchments.

There are also reports the business is wooing billionaire investors including Elon Musk to take on some of the debt load.

He faced significant opposition to his plans from within the industry and critics in politics, but last week struck a settlement agreement with 12 state attorneys-general who had sued to block the deal on anti-competition grounds.

In addition to the Paramount+ and HBO Max streaming platforms and the two movie studios, the merged company will house broadcast network CBS, cable news channel CNN and other sub-brands such as MTV, Cartoon Network and Discovery.
