Disney+’s latest magical TV show has just received an encouraging update for its Season 2. If you couldn’t guess it already, the series in the talk here is none other than Coven Academy, the streaming platform‘s very own show with Harry Potter and Wednesday vibes.
This update was given by the show’s leading talent, Malina Weissman, who plays Briar in the series. When asked by Variety about where the show might go in a potential second season, Weissman candidly said, “I am so excited for a Season 2,” even though the same hasn’t been greenlit, as of yet.
“In every show, in Season 1, you get to know the characters; you get to know the world; you get to know the baggage that everybody is carrying. In Season 2, you get to actually just live in it and see what happens,” she continued. “I hope that Briar keeps being confused about the two boys. I hope that she continues to figure herself out, and I hope that the three girls just have a lot of fun with life.”
Adding to this, Weissman also emphasized, “The show is about identity, so I hope each and every one of them keeps making bad decisions and good decisions and see where that takes them.”
What Coven Academy’s early success means for Season 2 chances
A story about a grieving teen, Coven Academy sees Briar show up on the doorstep of what she believes is a school for troubled girls. It doesn’t take her long to discover, with the help of her new classmates Sasha (played by Jordan Leftwich) and Tegan (played by Ora Duplass), that she is actually a witch.
With its release, the series earned a perfect Rotten Tomatoes critical score (alongside a 74% approval score from general audiences) and continues to stay strong during its ongoing streaming run. Needless to say, the show’s early success strongly positions it for a Season 2 renewal. However, Disney and Freeform have not officially greenlit a second season.
Thanks to its strong plot, the supernatural comedy-drama has generated rapid buzz and strong early streaming engagement. If a sequel gets greenlit, this could potentially be Disney+‘s new spooky franchise.
Coven Academy can currently be streamed on Disney+ and Hulu.
