Every Justice League founder deserves a LEGO cover
The new LEGO Joker comic book art set has us dreaming of DC comic covers we’d love to see become LEGO sets, with one for each Justice League founder.
Releasing on January 1, 67012 The Joker Wall Art Comic Cover recreates the iconic cover of Detective Comics #880 from 2011. The build depicts The Joker’s head made up of several ‘bats’, and the comic itself sees Batman hunting the Joker in the sewers beneath Gotham.
The comic cover is terrifying and iconic, and it has us wondering what other DC comic covers could work as LEGO sets. This won’t just be the obvious choices such as Action Comics #1 or Detective Comics #27, but covers that combine iconic imagery with something that would also look great as wall art. We’ve also limited ourselves to just one cover for each founding member of the Justice League.
Batman
For Batman, a great choice would be Batman #423 from 1988. Todd McFarlane’s iconic cover shows Batman standing on a cliff beneath a full moon, with bats flying around him.
This would make an excellent art set, as the bats could spill off the side of the piece, much like the imagery in 67012 The Joker Wall Art Comic Cover. The huge moon would also give the LEGO Group an opportunity to add plenty of colour to the build.
The Flash
Showcase #4 would make an excellent LEGO Art set for The Flash. The 1956 issue introduced Barry Allen as the Silver Age Flash, with a cover pencilled by Carmine Infantino and inked by Joe Kubert. The artwork shows Barry breaking free from a trail of film.
This trail of film could extend beyond the edge of the frame, while the overall design wouldn’t need to be huge. It could simply be large enough to capture the feeling of the Fastest Man Alive breaking free.
Superman
Superman has plenty of iconic comic covers, but Superman #233 from 1971 would work amazingly as a LEGO Art set. Neal Adams’ cover shows the Man of Steel escaping from kryptonite chains, and the angle, colour, and overall visual impact would look fantastic as a LEGO set.
The chains themselves could be built out of green elements, with pieces of kryptonite flying in every direction as Superman bursts free. It is an instantly recognisable image that could translate brilliantly into a three-dimensional wall display.
Green Lantern
Hal Jordan is very much in fashion right now thanks to Lanterns, and it would be excellent to see a LEGO Art set based on him, and Green Lantern #49 from 1994 would be an excellent choice.
The green tinge across the whole build and the menacing look could rival 67012 The Joker Wall Art Comic Cover in creepiness factor. The cover would certainly be challenging to recreate in LEGO, but that could make the finished model even more impressive.
Martian Manhunter
Martian Manhunter may not be the most popular member of the Justice League, but there is a fun comic that could work here. Detective Comics #225 from 1955 is the character’s first appearance, although you won’t actually find the Martian Manhunter on the cover.
Instead, the cover by Win Mortimer and Ira Schnapp is dominated by several people dressed as Batman for the story ‘If I Were Batman’. Martian Manhunter’s debut appears inside the issue as a backup story, meaning this would technically be a Batman cover – but true fans would know why it made this list.
Wonder Woman
Sensation Comics #1 from 1942 was Wonder Woman’s first solo cover appearance and would make an excellent LEGO Art set.
Harry G. Peter’s cover features Wonder Woman surrounded by a group of armed men, creating a simple but striking composition. There is enough background detail and colour to make it an interesting LEGO build without overwhelming the central character.
Aquaman
Finally, who could forget about Aquaman? His first-ever solo comic book, Aquaman #1 from 1962, has a cover featuring the hero battling underwater fire trolls, which on its own sounds like an excellent candidate for LEGO Art.
Red, Godzilla-like monsters firing across the sides of the frame as Aquaman and Aqualad swim above them would make for an excellent wall art set. The striking colours and unusual underwater setting could help it stand out from the rest of the LEGO DC collection.
Which DC comic cover would you like to see the LEGO Group tackle next? Let us know in the comments, and don’t forget that pre-orders are open now for 67012 The Joker Wall Art Comic Cover. The 1,849-piece set will launch on January 1, 2027, for £149.99 / $169.99 / €169.99.
