August may be light on holidays (hang in there a few more weeks until Labor Day, USians!), but this year it is absolutely packed with fun and moving new titles that I, as your friendly neighborhood comic book lover, can’t wait to share with you. It was a lot tougher than usual to whittle this list down to just eight titles, believe me!
Want heartwarming, uplifting adventures? You got it. How about an exciting fantasy story about a girl and the demon she makes a deal with? No problemo. Or maybe you’re in the mood for a more serious book that sheds light on dark historical moments? You’ll find that here, too. Whether you’re already prepping for school or trying to wring every last drop of enjoyment out of the rest of your vacation, these comics are the perfect addition to your day.
Middle School Monsters by Robin Easter (Aug 4)
Jamie is an ordinary middle schooler who also happens to be a werewolf. Determined to fit in at all costs, she goes to great lengths to hide her true nature and interests, even though it means hurting Vera, a vampire and her only real friend. Now Jamie has to decide if being popular is worth not being true to herself.
The Nightingales by Emil Wilson (Aug 4)
Inspired by true events, this affecting graphic novel follows Lou, a tomboyish high school senior who forms an unexpected and life-changing bond with her father’s friend Jim, who is dying of AIDS and moves into the Millers’ home after being evicted.
Crownsville by Rodney Barnes and Elia Bonetti (Aug 11)
This award-winning horror comic follows a police detective and a journalist as they uncover the horrifying truth behind an alleged suicide and the abandoned, all-Black mental hospital where the death took place — and where countless other lives were destroyed during the hospital’s long decades in operation.
