AMD Radeon RX 9070 1440p Gaming: Can It Handle the Latest AAA Games?

The Radeon RX 9070 delivers strong 1440p gaming performance with FSR 4.1, ray tracing, and 16GB of VRAM.

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 targets 1440p gaming with 16GB of VRAM, improved upscaling, and solid ray tracing performance. Native-resolution performance is only one part of the experience, though, as AAA games still strain contemporary GPUs. FSR’s upscaling and frame generation can greatly boost frame rates, but its impact on image quality and smoothness will be key to deciding whether the RX 9070 is worth the upgrade.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Performance

Testing starts with Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced at native 1440p, utilizing FSR for anti-aliasing without frame generation. Graphics settings follow Digital Foundry’s recommendations, keeping visuals near-max while boosting speed.

In the most demanding sequences with NPCs and environmental features, the RX 9070 reaches near 60 fps, sometimes slipping to 56-57 fps. Switching to FSR 4.1 Quality mode gives you about 77-80 fps, with visual quality similar to native resolution on a 27-inch display.

Enabling AMD’s machine learning-based frame generation boosts the frame rate displayed to 120-130 fps. But the gain in apparent smoothness is limited because the actual frame rate is still around 60 fps or higher. Frame pacing also matters; native rendering at 70-80 fps is better.

FSR Balanced mode can exceed 100 fps; however, this version scales resolution to 80%, reducing detail in foliage, grass, and wires. Quality mode offers a better balance of clarity and performance.

007 First Light Reveals FSR Limitations

007 First Light shows that AMD’s latest hardware doesn’t guarantee native compatibility with all visual features. The game doesn’t support FSR 4, and AMD’s official program can’t upgrade its FSR 3.1 integration. 3rd-party software like OptiScaler must be able to access FSR 4.1.1.

With maxed-out Ultra settings and FSR 4.1.1, the RX 9070 stays around 60 fps at native 1440p, peaking at around 80 fps in the most demanding moments. VRAM usage stays above 10GB, well within the card’s 16GB.

Good native resolution performance in games without ray tracing can push indoor scenes beyond 100 fps. With FSR Quality, many scenes exceed 100 fps, reaching 140–160 fps indoors. Image quality is quite close to native resolution, but character hair has a little more visual noise.

Resident Evil Requiem Tests Ray Tracing

Resident Evil Requiem limits AMD GPUs to High ray tracing, as it does not support ray tracing. Performance is around 55-56 fps in demanding cinematic situations, and closer to 70 fps in less demanding areas with maxed-out graphics settings, FSR 4.1.1, Native Anti-Aliasing, and frame generation turned off.

The game uses over 12 GB of VRAM, which shows how much memory modern games need. Lowering the graphics settings only gives a small performance improvement; however, switching to FSR Quality brings performance close to 90 fps in difficult sequences and above 100 fps in more frequent conditions.

Indoors, we achieve around 120 fps with no frame generation. Enabling frame generation boosts performance to roughly 190 fps, though imperfect frame pacing limits the apparent improvement.

Is the Radeon RX 9070 Worth Buying for 1440p?

The Radeon RX 9070 delivers solid 1440p gaming performance in demanding AAA titles. The FSR Quality option lets you reach higher frame rates with image quality close to native resolution. Ray tracing performance is okay, though similar NVIDIA GPUs still handle advanced rendering features better.

It has 16GB of VRAM, which gives you some memory headroom. Still, you’ll occasionally run into compatibility issues, so some games need third-party software to access newer FSR versions.

As a gamer, if you want to play games at beautiful 1440p and can find a good price, the RX 9070 is still a very attractive card. It offers a good mix of performance, memory capacity, and effective upscaling for recent games, though AMD’s software support and frame generation still need work.
