Long before Hillman College welcomes a new class this fall, A Different World had already made television history. The groundbreaking sitcom, which ran for six seasons from 1987 to 1993, brought life at a historically Black college to network television while tackling everything from race and class to relationships, politics, and the realities facing young Black Americans.
Now, more than three decades later, Netflix is opening the doors to Hillman once again — and introducing a new generation to the campus that became a cultural touchstone.
Premiering September 24, the A Different World sequel series centers on Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), the daughter of beloved Hillman alums Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) and Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy), as she begins her freshman year at her parents’ alma mater.
But before we dive into the trials and tribulations awaiting young Deborah and her classmates, here are a few essential episodes of the original A Different World to watch to get caught up on Hillman College and the characters who made it so unforgettable.

“Reconcilable Differences” Season 1 Episode 1
The series premiere follows Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) as she arrives at Hillman College and struggles to adjust to rooming with older student Jaleesa (Dawnn Lewis). Along the way, audiences meet characters who would become central to the show, including Whitley and Dwayne, while getting their first real look at Hillman College.
“Dream Lover” Season 2 Episode 4
A crucial turning point in the story. Up until this point, Dwayne had been in love with Denise, but then he began to develop feelings for Whitley that initially went unrequited. In this episode, the dynamic shifted as Whitley subconsciously daydreams about Dwayne, planting the first real seeds of their future romance. They share their first kiss in this episode. It’s just a little peck, but it later became so much more.
“Radio Free Hillman” Season 2 Episode 10
The episode marks the show’s pivot into its more socially conscious era with a story about censorship and First Amendment rights. After Dwayne gets in trouble for playing a song with questionable lyrics on his radio show, the cancellation of his show sparks Hillman’s first onscreen nonviolent protest.
“Forever Hold Your Peace” Season 3 Episode 5
In a crossover episode with The Cosby Show, Dwayne volunteers to drive Whitley to New York City for her father’s second wedding, hoping to visit Denise and confess his feelings for her. Instead, Denise shocks him by introducing her new husband, Martin Kendall (Joseph C. Phillips), and three-year-old stepdaughter, Olivia (Raven-Symoné). During the ride home, while the car is stuck in the snow, the duo share several sweet kisses that later ignite their future relationship.
The episode also marks Lisa Bonet’s final appearance on A Different World.
“Wedding Bells from Hell” Season 3 Episode 7
After the car incident, Whitley tries to deny her growing attraction to Dwayne. While planning Walter (Sinbad) and Jaleesa’s wedding, Dwayne confronts her about their shared feelings before pulling her into a passionate kiss that makes her knees buckle. After that, their relationship takes quite a turn.
“We’ve Only Just Begun” Season 5 Episode 1
The episode sees Jaleesa and Colonel Taylor (Glynn Turman) reveal that they have secretly eloped over summer vacation. It also introduces Lena James (Jada Pinkett Smith), a tough, confident student from Baltimore who becomes part of Hillman’s younger generation and a main fixture through the final two seasons.
“Honeymoon in L.A. (Part 2)” Season 5 Episode 22
In an episode that follows Whitley and Dwayne’s Los Angeles honeymoon as it is interrupted by the 1992 riots, Freddie (Cree Summer) debuts her new transformation from hippie chick to power-suit chic as she becomes a law student. She enrolls in Hillman Law School this semester, setting her on a new path.
“Save the Best for Last” Season 5 Episodes 24 and 25
Whitley prepares to marry Byron Douglas (Joe Morton) but is left torn as she still loves Dwayne. While having an existential crisis at the altar, Dwayne unexpectedly shows up just as the minister asks if anyone objects. Dwayne yells, “Whitley, I love you, and I want you to be my wife.” She ultimately chooses Dwayne over Byron, and the two marry on the spot. Dwayne’s “Please, baby, please!” still rings in the hearts of romantics to this very day.
“When One Door Closes…” Season 6 Episodes 21 and 22
Dwayne accepts a lucrative engineering job at the Kineshewa Corporation in Tokyo, Japan, before Whitley surprises him with the news that she is pregnant with their first child. Kim Reese (Charnele Brown) and her boyfriend Spencer (Michael Ralph) also get engaged. The series’ final shot is shared by Dwayne, Whitley, and Ron (Darryl M. Bell), the three original characters who remain through the entire run.
