What’s Happening with the Netflix ‘Minecraft’ Series?

Wondering if the Minecraft animated series is still happening? Despite recent viral rumors, Reddit panic, and a noticeable absence from summer animation showcases, we have some very good news for you.

Back in 2024, to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the legendary game, Netflix and Mojang Studios dropped the massive announcement that they were partnering for a brand-new CG-animated Minecraft series. The project was handed to WildBrain Studios—the animation powerhouse behind Netflix’s Sonic Prime and Carmen Sandiego.

The last major public update we received was back at the Annecy Animation Festival in June 2025, where the core creative team was announced (in addition to some very early stills and concept art). But since then? Total radio silence.

The lack of news reached a boiling point earlier this summer when the series was notably completely absent from Netflix’s Annecy 2026 showcase. That missing slot, coupled with a lack of any promotional material over the past year, led to intense speculation. Over the past week, tweets (like this viral post from @thegabodiaz and Birdtopher, which has picked up millions of views) began gaining traction, putting serious doubt on whether the series was still happening at all.

Fans on Reddit have been just as anxious, doing some serious detective work of their own across subreddits like r/Minecraft and r/cartoons. Redditors pointed out that it’s been a full two years since the initial greenlight, with anxiety mounting that the show could become a quiet casualty of behind-the-scenes cuts, much like Inside Job.

Is the Minecraft animated series canceled?

No, it is absolutely not. To get some clarity, we reached out directly to Netflix. While they are keeping their cards close to their chest regarding anything substantial about timelines, a Netflix representative told What’s on Netflix that the series is still coming and production is continuing as planned. 

If that isn’t enough to calm your nerves, we actually just got a brand-new, public confirmation straight from the top of Mojang. On August 28th, 2026, Jens “Jeb” Bergensten (Minecraft’s Lead Designer and Creative Director) took to Bluesky to officially squash the cancellation rumors. Replying to a fan page asking for a status update, Jens succinctly confirmed: “Yes we are still working on it!”

In case that wasn’t enough, many people attached to the project still list their employment as “current” on the series.

When will the Minecraft animated series be on Netflix?

If production is continuing as planned but there are still no major visual updates to share in late 2026, our best guess is that the series won’t be out until 2027 at the earliest, or potentially even 2028. This falls perfectly in line with the announcements and production schedules of other major Netflix Original animated series, which often require 3 to 4 years of runway from greenlight to our screens. 

What’s wild about this timeline is that we will likely see the second live-action Minecraft movie before the Netflix animated series even drops. Of course, you could argue Netflix and Mojang announced the project too early, but they did it solely to align with the anniversary. 

Following the massive box office success of the first live-action film in April 2025, Warner Bros. immediately fast-tracked a sequel. A Minecraft Movie Squared officially began filming in New Zealand back in May 2026, bringing back Jack Black and Jason Momoa alongside franchise newcomer Kirsten Dunst. That live-action sequel already has a locked-in theatrical release date of July 23, 2027. Yes, that means the movie sequel is moving faster than the animated series!

It’s not the only quiet animated project on Netflix…

If you’re frustrated by the lack of updates, it’s worth noting that Minecraft is far from the only major video game adaptation being kept under lock and key at Netflix.

Take the Clash of Clans animated series, for example. Announced in May 2025 as a project based on the juggernaut mobile strategy game, it has suffered a similarly quiet fate. Just recently, however, a fan asked Matt Webb Mitovich’s Matt’s Inside Line column if the Clash of Clans project had been quietly canceled. A Netflix rep affirmed that the animated series is still very much happening, with Fletcher Moules (director of the original, highly viewed Clash of Clans promotional animated videos) still serving as showrunner.
