Ridley Scott’s Third Alien Prequel Gets An Exciting Update, But Will It Ever Be Made?

Decades after directing the original Alien, Ridley Scott returned to the iconic sci-fi franchise by helming a pair of prequel films, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, that aimed to expand the lore and mythology by exploring deep, philosophical questions. Scott had plans for a third project to round out a trilogy, but the Alien prequel series was scrapped following Covenant‘s mixed reception and box office performance. 20th Century Studios took Alien in a different direction with throwback thriller Alien: Romulus, but Scott’s two prequels have been reappraised, with some fans appreciating what the director was going for. This has sparked interest in seeing Scott’s third prequel. A year after stating he’d be up for it, the legendary filmmaker has offered another exciting update.

Speaking with the Los Angeles Times ahead of the release of his new film The Dog Stars, Scott mentioned that another Alien prequel is being developed. The story would pick up from where Covenant left off, chronicling the android David as he looks to build a “brave new world for himself.” In particular, Scott is intrigued by the angle of an A.I. going rogue. “AIs can go off. And if they do, it’s like a bomb,” he said. Additional information, such as a production timeline or possible release date, is unknown at this time.

Will Ridley Scott Ever Make His Third AlienPrequel Movie?

It’s exciting to hear that even after all this time (Covenant premiered back in 2017), Scott remains interested in revisiting the world of Alien for at least one more installment. The franchise became famous for featuring a rotating lineup of directors who put their own unique stamp on the material, but Scott was the one who introduced audiences to the xenomorph, and he deserves an opportunity to wrap up a trilogy if he has a strong enough story to tell. Based on the details he’s shared, it sounds like Scott has a compelling narrative in mind. Building the movie around David is a smart choice. Thanks to Michael Fassbender’s magnetic performances, David was the standout character of the first two Alien prequels, and he’s someone fans would like to see more of. Additionally, a deep dive into an A.I. wreaking havoc is a timely premise that could hold a mirror to today’s world.

However, it’s worth wondering if Scott’s third Alien prequel will ever see the light of day. For starters, Scott (who turns 89 later this year) is keeping himself busy with an abundance of other projects. He’s currently setting up a Treasure Island movie starring Hugh Jackman, which begins production later this year. The LA Times profile also mentions other films like a Bee Gees biopic and an adaptation of the World War I novel Covenant of Death that are in the works. Any of those could be Scott’s next film after Treasure Island, or possibly something else that hasn’t been announced yet. A lot will depend on how these various scripts come together and what emerges as the priority. The longer it takes Scott’s next Alien film to get in front of the cameras, the odds of it happening decrease.

It’ll also be interesting to see what 20th Century Studios has planned for the Alien franchise. Following the success of Romulus, which was the best-reviewed Alien movie since 1986 (80% on Rotten Tomatoes), a sequel was quickly pushed into development. The timetable of that project is uncertain as the studio searches for a new director, but after seeing how well Romulus worked critically and commercially, 20th Century Studios could opt to stick with that approach, moving forward with another film that harkens back to the spirit of the original Alien. Whether or not the third Alien prequel formally gets the green light could come down to if the executives think it’s worth the investment.

If development on the Romulus sequel stalls, reviving Scott’s prequel project wouldn’t be the worst idea. That would be a way to keep the Alien franchise in the limelight while work continues on Romulus 2, building off the renewed interest in Prometheus. The Alien IP has enjoyed a bit of a resurgence recently with the popularity of both Romulus and the TV series Alien: Earth. It would be a shame if there was a lull in the release calendar after all that positive momentum, so 20th Century Studios should be open to seeing what Scott has in mind.
