Country Music Queen, Pop Culture Icon Dolly Parton Passes Away

Dolly Parton, the country music star who became an indelible part of pop culture, has passed away. Parton’s nephew Bryan Seaver announced in a video posted to Parton’s Instagram account that she passed away. A representative for the family noted that she died peacefully in Nashville. She was 80 years old.

A statement by the family read:

“A rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see, Dolly will forever stand as an inspiration not only through her timeless music and prolific songwriting, but also her wit, warmth, and kindness that made us all feel like family. Dolly Parton’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and resilience. With a seven-decade career, she inspired multiple generations of artists and fans with her music and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. Her songs will continue to resonate with people of all ages, and her philanthropic work will have a lasting impact.”

Parton, who grew up in poverty, parlayed a wildly successful country music career into a presence that spread across all facets of public consciousness. Her music career began in the 1950s as a child, performing on radio and television programs in East Tennessee. Her first recorded single, “Puppy Love,” was released in 1959 when she was just 13 years old. She would go on to become a songwriter and released her first album, Hello, I’m Dolly, in 1967.

Stardom followed, as she joined The Porter Wagoner Show and became one of the top country music duos with Wagoner. She also eventually found singles success with 1973’s “Jolene,” which became one of the most popular songs in country music. She and Wagoner split as a duo not long after that, and Parton was off to the races as a singles star with hits like “I Will Always Love You” — eventually covered by Whitney Houston in 1992 for The Bodyguard which became the best-selling single by a female artist.

Parton’s success and fame reached new heights in the late 1970 and early 1980s, during which she continued to dominate country music charts while also spreading out into acting. Her first role was in 1980’s 9 to 5, which became a massive hit and spawned another chart-topper with the title song. Roles in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Rhinestone, and Steel Magnolias followed as she continued to release music. She remained a presence in the charts and on film throughout the rest of the 20th century as she shifted her music to more of a bluegrass style.

Parton also established Dollywood, her theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, which became a heavy success in its own right with 4 million visitors annually. She added to her portfolio with businesses that included everything from frozen foods and cosmetics to dinner theaters and hotels.

While Parton’s career eased back a bit from the mid-2000s, she remained active in acting and touring, where she remained a massive success including a concert at Glastonbury Festival to 140,000 people in 2014. She also became a bestselling author and saw her life story turned into a musical, Dolly: A True Original Musical, which will premiere om Broadway in December.

In addition to her commercial ventures, Parton was known worldwide for her charitable work, which began in the 1980s with programs like Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and other efforts to boost literacy. She donated money to a variety of charitable causes throughout her life including conservation, poverty aid, disaster relief and more. Parton was also a regular and vocal advocate for the LGBTQ+ community throughout her life, embracing the queer community and coming out in support of transgender rights.

Over the course of her life, Parton was inducted into well over 20 Halls of Fame including Country Music Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, The Americana Highway Hall of Fame, the Grammy Hall of Fame (four times), the Music City Walk of Fame, the Country Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Musicians Hall of Fame. She was a 13-time Academy of Country Music Awards winner, an 11-time Grammy Award winner, a 10-time Country Music Association Awards winner, a six-time Golden Globe Nominee, two-time Oscar nominee, and the recipient of the 2025 Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy Awards.

On behalf of 411, our condolences to the family, friends, and world of fans of Dolly Parton. In many, many ways, the world was a better place with her in it and her presence will be deeply missed.
