What makes pop culture so powerful today is not just how fast inspiration spreads, but how quickly it becomes personal.

Beyond the screen, we see it in the way people dress, decorate and host. For years, the influence moved in waves — from J-wave to K-wave, and now increasingly, the C-wave. But what feels notable now is not just the speed of that influence. It is the way fandom is evolving into taste.

Over the past year, trends such as Chinamaxxing have made that shift easier to see. Much of the conversation began with everyday habits – drinking warm water, wearing house slippers, boiling apples, eating warm breakfasts – practices that felt grounded, practical and unexpectedly appealing to younger audiences online.

But habits are rarely where cultural fascination ends. More often, they are where it begins.

What is emerging now is a broader form of inspiration. For many Gen Z consumers, interest in Chinese culture is no longer confined to lifestyle observations or internet commentary. It is showing up in the images they save, the references they return to and the aesthetics they are using to shape how they want to live, dress and express themselves. What begins as curiosity is becoming taste.

    Where taste starts taking shape

Among Gen Z users on Pinterest, searches for “Love in the Clouds Chinese drama” (+425%), “Tian Xiwei” (+405%) and “Esther Yu outfits” (+150%)point to growing interest in Chinese storytelling and the visual worlds surrounding it.

That fascination is moving far beyond the screen.  Rising Gen Z searches for “auspicious cloud pattern” (+265%), “new Chinese style layout” (+230%) and “eastern aesthetics” (+220%)suggest growing engagement with contemporary Chinese-inspired interiors and design.

These are not separate trends. They show how Gen Z now discovers culture: a drama becomes a style reference; an aesthetic detail becomes inspiration for a room, a wardrobe or a way of living. Culture is no longer consumed in categories – it is curated into personal taste.

That is why Pinterest offers such a useful lens on these shifts. Gen Z is now the platform’s largest and fastest-growing audience, accounting for more than 50% of global monthly active users. And because people come to Pinterest to save, plan and imagine, we often see these signals while they are still forming.

Part of the reason these shifts are so visible on Pinterest is that cultural influence often begins before people have the language to describe it.

Traditional search tends to start with intent. Someone already knows what they are looking for and searches accordingly.

Visual discovery is often less direct. People begin with a feeling, a mood or an image that resonates before they know exactly what to call it. They save ideas, collect references and gradually build a clearer picture of what they like through the process of exploring.

Someone may not search specifically for “Neo-Chinese Homes” or “Eastern aesthetics” Instead, they might save a living room that feels calm and contemporary, a design motif that catches their eye or a visual style that reflects how they want a space to feel. Over time, those searches, saves and boards begin to reveal broader shifts in taste.

This is where Pinterest’s Taste Graph stands apart. Built from more than 80 billion monthly searches4, alongside the saves and boards people create, it identifies emerging interests and aesthetics as they are taking shape before they turn mainstream.

For brands, the lesson here is not just that Chinese aesthetics are having a moment. It is that fandom has become one of the clearest ways to understand how taste now travels.

<a href="https://comicvibe.com/sports-entertainment-group-asxseg-reports-fy26-growth-with-ebitda-expansion-and-mediaworks-acquisition-in-focus/” title=”Sports Entertainment Group (ASX:SEG) Reports FY26 Growth With EBITDA Expansion and MediaWorks Acquisition in Focus”>Entertainment’s influence doesn’t end when the credits roll. Increasingly, fandom has become a way for people to explore identity, creativity and self-expression beyond the content they consume. A Gen Z consumer saving a C-drama fashion reference or a Neo-Chinese interior isn’t necessarily trying to recreate that aesthetic exactly. More often, they’re drawing from the worlds, stories and creative cues that resonate with them and making those influences their own.

That is precisely why fandom matters. Trends show you what is visible. Fandom reveals what endures. What people choose to return to – what they save, revisit and reinterpret signals more than attention –  It reveals the identities, aspirations and tastes they are actively shaping for themselves.

For brands, that requires a different instinct. The opportunity is to understand what people are connecting with beneath the surface, why it resonates and how it travels from entertainment into fashion, interiors and everyday life.

Because if trends tell us what is popular, fandom tells us what people want to make their own. And for brands trying to understand Gen Z, that is a valuable signal.
